The American Flag Daily: Caesar Rodney's Ride

With the Delaware delegation deadlocked on the question of approving the Declaration of Independence in the Continental Congress, Caesar Rodney rode 70 miles in a thunderstorm the night of July 1, 1776 to arrive in Philadelphia as the vote for independence began the next morning. Rodney cast the deciding vote for Delaware in favor of independence, and would eventually sign the Declaration on August 2, 1776. Rodney's ride is depicted on the back of the Delaware quarter, issued in 1999.

Good thing he didn’t take 495 or we’d still be British.

The movie "1776" is one that I always watch at this time of year. May not be 5 stars but it does pretty good for a brief précis of the time and state surrounding the Declaration. As can be expected from a Broadway musical adaptation, it has some genuinely good music. My heart-strings are always plucked by "Momma, Look Sharp", and the "Finale" which celebrates the signing, makes me proud.

Caesar Rodney's Ride is shown here and like much else in the movie (and play) many liberties are taken with actual history, but in defense, it is a comedy musical. I'd love to teach history starting with this movie and then use it to dive into the complexities that it can only give light coverage.

The key to humor an element of truth. Well played.
