MI:Multiple Dog Attack Stopped by Gunfire. This one too Late.
Gun Watch ^ | 29 July, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

In Michigan, two Cane Corsos, a large breed descended from Roman war dogs, attacked a jogger.  A neighbor saw that the jogger was down with the dogs attacking him.   He  defended the attacked man with a .44 magnum, firing two shots, one in the air, the other at one of the dogs, grazing it.   That stopped the attack.   Later one of the dogs tried to return to the attack, but left when it saw the man with the gun.  From  freep.com:

A man mowing his lawn waved at Sytsma, a 46-year-old Livonia man, who politely waved back. The man said he continued mowing the lawn and the next time he saw Sytsma, he was in a nearby ditch being attacked by two loose dogs.

(snip)

The man who had been mowing shot a handgun into the air. Still, the dogs would not let go. So he shot at one of the dogs, grazing it in the side.
The attacked man later died.  Cane Corsos tend to weigh over a 100 lbs as adults.   From wikipedia:
The Cane Corso is not recommended for novice dog owners. As a puppy, it requires strong leadership and consistent training. Its natural instinct is to be suspicious of strangers and for this reason it is highly encouraged to begin socialization as soon as possible. Ideally the Cane Corso should be indifferent when approached and should only react in a protective manner when a real threat is present.
These multiple dog attacks show the utility of firearms in defending against animals.

Great, just great. We who like to walk will be thrilled to know that there are more pets out there who can kill us.
Just the way a guy wants to go too

You’ll need to walk around with a hog leg 24/7 because of these losers with their novelty attack dogs.

never fire a warning shot, its taught in the conceal carry Texas class, fire only to kill but they don’t call it that. In this case he should have shot all the dogs. You own that warning shot and its considered a careless endangerment of society to fire a warning shot that could go somewhere and hurt an innocent bystander. You should only fire to defend life.

If I remember correctly, a couple lesbians in SF love killer dogs.

In South Central Texas, it’s Rockweillers s/. But sarcasm aside, the Pit bulls have been getting a very bad rap mainly due to the idiot owners. Your run of the mill Pit Bull should be extremely friendly with people, you just have to watch them around other dogs. Also, the Rotties are great if they don’t come from a backyard breeder, the German stock love people.
Disclaimer: this opinion comes from a man that has been working with dogs and cats for the past 33 years only.

Wrong. That was the defense of the dog owner -- that the attacked and killed woman was a lesbian and wore an odd scented perfume. The dog owners were attorneys who bred them with the help of one of their imprisoned clients.

The dog owners also had sex with their “pets” and shared the videos with their clients in jail. It was a hideous case, and the poor woman who was attacked, whether she was a lesbian or not, was in no way responsible for this and in fact had asked both the owners and building management to do something about the dogs.

Given these dogs were loose, I’d say it’s a safe bet they had an idiot owner as well.

Was this the type of dog that killed that woman in California?

And I must dispute the author’s conclusion, just because this poor man ultimately died does not mean guns are an ineffectual defense against animals.

I’d like to know what other weapon would be more effective. I suppose most people don’t jog with guns, but if this runner had had his own gun he might be alive today.

Yes, that poor woman, she was ripped to death in her own hallway. And I think she was a lesbian, and iirc she was very athletic and in great shape. That did her no good against 2 killer dogs. When i grew up in an NYC apartment it was no dogs allowed. And those people who owned those dogs were just about as sick a couple as I’ve ever heard of.

Whatever happened to them? Did they go to prison? I certainly hope they got disbarred.

never fire a warning shot. if you can fire a warning you don’t need to fire. attorneys eat people up on this point. further if the warning shot goes somewhere and causes a problem, you have that to deal with.

“And I must dispute the author’s conclusion, just because this poor man ultimately died does not mean guns are an ineffectual defense against animals.”

The man with a gun stopped the attack very quickly. It was so stated in the article. The concluding line in the article was:

“These multiple dog attacks show the utility of firearms in defending against animals.”

How do you interpret that as saying that guns are an ineffectual defense against animals?

This is a very sad and tragic occurrence, but I want to know about the owners and what they did to these particular animals. There happen to be quite a few breeds that are larger and faster than Pit Bulls with the potential to do great physical harm. My dog is a Mastador, half English Mastiff and Half Labrador Retriever, he looks almost exactly like the dog you have pictured, weighs 140 pounds(slightly undersize for a male)and if abused would be able to do horrific damage. IF ABUSED, there are many breeds that were once bred for war and fighting that in modern times have become loyal and mellow companions. These two animals have been damaged and must be destroyed, but I want to find out about the human animals that ruined them.

Certainly there are many large dogs that are wonderful at what they do.

However, large animals are simply more dangerous than small animals.

Oh, thank you! I’m an idiot and completely misread that as “futility”. LOL, I’m amazed I never made that mistake before, I never realized how close those 2 words are.
