DURHAM -- NC Central University's Black Law Students Association protested the shooting death of Michael Brown, the unarmed black 18 year old shot to death by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
On the same day as Brown's funeral, the students hosted a "Hands Up" rally.
"The question is not if there will be another incident like this, but when and where," said NCCU Law Professor Irving Joyner during his remarks.
Wearing all black on the same day as Brown's funeral, NC Central law students, professors and Durham community members posed for a picture with their hands raised like Brown did earlier this month before he was shot to death.
"Not a picture with our hands up saying don't shoot, but one in which we will leave here and shoot ourselves into a community where we seek to help to empower powerless people," said Joyner, who believes changes can happen if concerned citizens gain and maintain power. "All they have to do is register and vote.
"Students realize they can't just sit on the sidelines."In August it was Ferguson, Missouri. It could easily be Durham, North Carolina, said Starr Battle, NCCU Black Law Students association president. For the fact, we need to make sure that everyone advocates for a better plan of action when it comes to our children in the community.
"This week, North Carolina NAACP President Rev. William Barber will head to Ferguson to work with the people of that community. He addressed the crowd at NCCU before leaving.
"We've got to call together allies across race and color. This can't just be a black issue. It's got to be an American issue," Barber said. Joyner pushed for action to minimize future needless tragedies.
"If you don't do anything, you are going to elevate the problem," Joyner said.
NC Central said Monday's rally is not one event, but the beginning of a movement. This Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the Great Hall on campus, the university's Black Law Students Association will hold a follow-up conversation.
Appears to be no objection to all the black thugs killing whites?
“their hands raised like Brown did earlier this month before he was shot to death.”
Lie.
Thanks to the MSM.
So “SoulGlo, the Buffet Slayer” is headed outta Raleigh???
1. don’t punch officers in the head. you will be shot.
2. don’t strongarm rob convenience stores. could get you shot by storeowners, ccw citizens, and/or cops.
3. dont riot, destroy property, or loot other folks homes and businesses. could very well get you shot.
seems black ‘moms’ aren’t giving their kids the basics in manners and survival.
Or each other x 10000
