This installment continues by exposing how Democrats did everything they could to undermine the Union Army and humiliate Lincoln and the Republicans so they could keep Blacks as their slaves.
On March 3, 1865 a Republican Congress established the Freedmens Bureau to provide health care, education, and technical assistance to emancipated slaves. [7]
On April 8, 1865 the 13th Amendment, banning slavery, passed the Senate with 100% Republican support, but 63% Democrat opposition. [8]
In February 1866, Republican Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania introduced legislation to give 40 acres and a mule to male former slaves. Democrat President Andrew Johnson vetoed the measure. [9]
Overriding Democrat Andrew Johnsons veto, Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which affirmed the citizenship of African Americans.
When the Republican Congress passed the 14th Amendment giving African Americans rights to due process and equal protection under law, it did so with not a single Democratic Representatives vote. [10]
On November 22, 1865 Republicans denounced the Democrat legislature of Mississippi for enacting black codes, which institutionalized racial discrimination.
In July 1866 the Republican controlled Congress had to override Democrat Andrew Johnsons veto of the Freedmans Bureau Act which was created to protect African Americans from the Black Codes which were laws devised by the Democrat controlled Southern States to suppress the civil rights of freed men.
