Local leaders weigh in on "Labinal" closing (Leaving Maryland, headed to Denton, Texas)

SALISBURY, Md. -

A shocking turn of events on Wednesday, as aeronautical company Labinal Power Systems announced it will soon be closing its doors. This means over 600 employees -- about 94% from Wicomico County -- may be out of a job.

According to Labinal, up to 160 of those employees could possibly be transferred to their Texas facility. As for the rest, local leaders say there are resources in town.

Those resources may come in the form of "re-training". According to Wor-Wic Community College president Ray Hoy, these workers have valuable skills but they might not translate to another job right away. To offer assistance, Hoy tells 47 ABC Wor-Wic will be joining with the Department of the Labor Licensing, along with the work-force investment board, which apparently has 100-thousand dollars set aside for training.

"Workforce investment board will sit down with them, work with them, help them find what their future might look like and then we'll provide training." Explains Hoy.

According to local economic experts, one area continuing to grow on the shore is the health care industry. But it doesn't mean it's for everyone. Hoy tells us re-training also depends on what people are actually interested in.

One of the most important steps is to understand what resources are out there, in order to ensure they get back on their feet as soon as possible according to Greg Eberts, of the Maryland Workforce Exchange.

"We need access to the employees as soon as possible." Says Eberts. "People need to know what the menu of services are. They're going to need to make sure own their own decisions on which way they want to go."

Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton has sent a letter to Safran CEO Peter Lengyel, imploring him to reconsider the decision. 47 ABC reached out to the company and according to a spokesperson, Lengyel has received the requests; however, they are not available for an immediate comment at this time.

I used to go into plants like this as part of the job service ("unemployment office") team to let them know what we could do for them. They're usually not happy campers.

Welcome to Texas, but if you expect us to be like Maryland, stay the hell out!

Why would they be unhappy? This is what they voted for.

This part of Maryland votes Republican now as does the rest of the state except, and it is a big exception, PG, Montgomery, Baltimore Counties (and maybe Howard County?) and the City of Baltimore. The state is like many (Pennsylvania for instance) with the metro core being Dem and the rest Republican.

A shame for the Eastern Shore which, as the previous poster said, is a red area.

The Democrat Party is a cancer.

It’s a subsidiary of French aerospace multinational Safran.

Were the employees here basically factory workers?

You can add NYS to the list. A lot of people don’t realize that much of NY is Republican and greatly unlike NYC and the urban spots like Rochester and Albany. A lot of NYS is rural, small town, and quite scenic. However, people continue to move out of state leaving a higher percentage of socialists and takers in NYS as a whole.

Denton has grown from 30,000 to 120,000, cost of operations is far lower in Texas than Maryland, as is the cost of living. Then you have the Port of Houston about 6 hours away, and the DFW Airport 30 minutes away, and in a metro area of 8-9 Million.

Maryland is no longer competitive. Neither is NY, CT, etc.

Merely by way of speculation I wonder of Socialist States will ever learn that their policies are destroying the very entities they rely on to provide funds?

I used to live in Dallas proper when Denton was still fairly small. The resources and cost of living/business costs are making it hard NOT to set up business in Texas. Maybe its time to go back. If the labor pool for software tech workers and the availability of health care jobs are strong, I would have few arguments against it.

A combination of “laboratory” and “urinal,” I guess.

do they specialize in labotomies? If so, they should stay in Maryland, that is where all their real business lies.

This is a blow to an area on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay that is hurting for jobs.
