This handgun drill is termed "The Charging Initiator", though the drill emphasis is on testing the shooter's reaction time, presentation against a buddy. But, the main goal is to have the shooters go from zero to full speed blasting away in a few seconds with accuracy. Check out the video here. What's your favorite handgun drills?

I know the exhaustive FBI handgun report that came out a few years ago stressed the importance of quick, accurate follow up shots. They came to the conclusion that “stopping power” is a myth. There is no actual significant difference between a 9mm, .40 cal and .45 in terms of “stopping power”. Medical personnel cannot tell the difference between wound channels made with these various calibers. They also documented dozens of reports from the field of bad guys who kept coming and shooting after being hit center mass with a .40 or .45 cal. Thus, they concluded that the most important factor in the field is the ability to put multiple rounds in the target in as short a time as possible. Their range tests showed that their agents, both the best shooters and the average, were able to accomplish faster, more accurate follow up shots with a 9mm than the other two calibers. This is why the FBI is going back to 9mm.

Exactly. A facial surgeon who is also a member of my gun club confirmed this fact to me in a very interesting conversation.

I would argue that there is a big difference between a 115 grain 9mm and a 230 grain .40 in terms of stopping power. And the 9mm tends to go straight through.

The wound channel may look the same but was the perp still standing or knocked on his azz? That’s the difference.

"The wound channel may look the same but was the perp still standing or knocked on his azz? That’s the difference."

The FBI report concluded that the only way to guarantee that you will knock the attacker on his azz is to hit him in the head or spinal column. Whatever the caliber. Most of the time when bad guys go down after a non lethal hit it is a conditioned response. There were a multitude of documented instances in the report of bad guy who kept coming and shooting after being hit center mass. In fact, there are instances of perps receiving a fatal shoot in the heart who kept fighting back for 20 to 30 seconds before they bled out enough to become incapacitated. Whether you agree with it or not the FBI report is very interesting. There's a two part video on youtube that examines this report in pretty good detail which is well worth checking out. I don't have the link so you will have to search for it on youtube.

Well I own two 9mm’s and its a natural fact that they are easier to shoot quickly and accurately but a lot of the stopping power is ammo. Lucky Gunner has a really good video that you might want to watch comparing the various brands and types of ammo in different calibers.
