Will Electric Vehicles Cause A Future Oil Crash?

The major oil companies greatly underestimate the impact electric vehicles will have on their market, write independent energy advisors Salman Ghouri and Andreas de Vries. According to Ghouri and De Vries, the trends currently underway in the auto industry are likely to have a substantial impact on oil demand in the medium term, and even a devastating impact in the longer term.

If there is one event in history that has shaped the crude oil industry, it is the popularization of the internal combustion engine (ICE) by the auto industry.

At the beginning of the 20th century, coal and wood were the dominant sources of energy, together providing more than 90 percent of global energy consumption. From 1910 onward, however, the Automotive Revolution triggered by Henry Ford spurred on demand for liquid fuels, causing crude oil’s contribution to global energy supply to more than double every decade. Consequently, by 1970 crude oil had taken top-spot in the global energy mix.

Of course not. What is going to produce the electricity to run the electric cars? Oil, of course.

From what I hear, electric cars will cause the demand for electricity to go up, as we will need to plug in all these cars to recharge. If enviro Nazis allow us to build new power plants , some will be oil fired plants, some will be natural gas, some will be coal.

The zeal to have electric cars shows the short sightedness of the liberals in my opinion. The liberals do not think through exactly where all of the electricity to recharge electric cars will come from.

While the electric car itself produces zero emissions, there will be increased emissions elsewhere to generate the electricity for the electric cars. This key point is always overlooked by the liberals.

Electric cars will always be toys for the rich unless the problem of quick charge is finally solved .

Of course not. Who’s dumb enough to buy a battery powered car? You be better off making one like those spring car toys. Back it up ten feet, wind the spring and jump in. Enjoy the ride.

Because Liberals are Idiots living in a fantasy all their own.
Reality is a foreign concept for them.

Quick charge and range. Having to plug a car in after only two hours use is a pain.

Reality is a foreign concept for them.

They will not be zero emissions as many motors give off ozone and batteries usually off gas. If they use rubber for tires there will be particulates also. There will be many unexpected consequences.

My grandson has one on the patio. Man...does his remote control ever go through those batteries!

What is the matter with you? We get electricity to charge our cars from that plug on the wall, there is no oil in there. Just ask the greenies if you don’t believe me.

not for years, however, China is making a HUGE push for electric cars, their smog problem in Beijing and elsewhere is terrible, electric cars are their fallback

True but UPS runs a fleet of electric delivery trucks in my area. Saw an electric frito lay truck also. There appears to be a niche for at least some use of EVs commercially.

There are vanishingly few oil fired central station electrical generation plants. There’s probably more solar electrical output in the USA, and it’s down in the noise. Small island systems is probably about it. Well, maybe in Saudi Arabia, but even there, they probably use natural gas that they would otherwise flare.

To me range is almost irrelevant. I don't care if the range is only 100 miles. If I can recharge in 5 minutes then I don't care about short range.

Does it catch fire as well?

Side note: I find it blasphemous that Elon Musk uses Tesla’s name. Tesla was a genius of the first order, Musk is a crony capitalist.

Cheaper to who, the buyer or the taxpayer? Tesla is pretty much the poster boy for crony capitalism. Take away the gubmint subsidies and very few people would even consider them.

Not sure if your post is serious or not, but...

Sources of electricity in the U.S.:
Coal = 39%
Natural gas = 27%
Nuclear = 19%
Hydropower = 6%
Other renewables = 7%
Biomass = 1.7%
Geothermal = 0.4%
Solar = 0.4%
Wind = 4.4%
Petroleum = 1%
Other gases < 1%
