Charlie LeDuff Video Highlights the GOP Disconnect via Vichy Republicanism at National Review… Posted on April 11, 2016 by sundance

Charlie LeDuff has produced an amazingly good boots-on-the-ground video which shows how insufferably connected the chattering class of Vichy Republicans have become.

LeDuff showcases the disconnect by highlighting a series of articles in National Review, and then actually going to the locales belittled by the NRO staff and talking to the ordinary, hard-working middle class people who live within them.

Driving to New York – LeDuff actually interviews the people that NRO is figuratively writing about, the resulting contrast speaks volumes:

“Shocked by their support of Donald Trump, some elitist conservative thinkers are calling places like Garbutt, NY pockets of misery, welfare fraud and dope addiction. They say let these towns die. Turns out Garbutt is not like that at all”.

LeDuff masterfully tells a real life short story and simultaneously contrasts the pontificating arrogance of the Charles Cooke, Kevin Williamson, Rich Lowry and Johan Goldberg types at National Review. The resulting work is brilliant:

I wonder if Cruzers actually believe this stuff coming out of NRO, claiming these white blue collar workers are just a bunch of drug addicts who need to "put down their heroin needle" and move to "where there are jobs" after the glorious forces of Free Trade have left their towns in ruins? See video at link.

The GOP needs to disappear.

A lot of Trump supporters seem to feel that way. I've had a great many conversations with Trump supporters who say that a Republican Congress is no better than a Democrat one, so that's not an attitude that's due only to this primary season.

Whether the sentiment that "the GOP needs to disappear" is right or wrong, it's apparent that the GOP itself (and those who support it) probably isn't going to be too keen on that idea, and will resist those who want to destroy it.

To the extent people wanted the GOP to be destroyed because it was just part of the "Uniparty", the better course would have been for Trump to run as an independent, with destroying the GOP as a goal. He'd have been happy, his supporters would have been happy, and you wouldn't have run into the completely predictable conflict between those who want to destroy the GOP, and the GOP itself.

Hopefully that will still happen.

And I’m not even really a Trump supporter. I just hate the GOP.

- - - - - -
All indications are that they do believe it. Some really think Ted Cruz can accept money from the “Washington Cartel”, and then dismantle it. Others are counting on Ted Cruz “trying as hard as he can”, but not quite being able to change things so that their lives can go on as they are.

As long as the party continues to be the party of Bush, Romney, etc., the party will continue to decline.

Excellent video!

Demos, liberals, and the GOPe left like to paint good hardworking white men as the problem. They prefer not to touch on issues like black violence, welfare, the real drug users, etc.

Charlie LeDuff is a pant-load.
He pops up on Kennedy once in a while and that's my cue to scoop the litter box.

False analysis, because the GOP is censoring the political speech and the political actions of the majority of its lifelong Republican voters, and it has been doing so for nearly a century. These Republican voters have simply had enough of this disloyal and corrupt behavior.

It’s telling that a Cruzer saw fit to put “nut house” in the keywords (playing off the website name, Treehouse), in defense of the NRO’s declaring white, blue collar workers of just being a bunch of low educated drug addicts.

False analysis, because the GOP is censoring the political speech....

It is not censoring political speech. Anyone is free to say whatever they want.

and the political actions of the majority of its lifelong Republican voters, and it has been doing so for nearly a century. These Republican voters have simply had enough of this disloyal and corrupt behavior.

Well, the problem is that Trump voters haven't represented a "majority" of Republican voters this primary season. They represent a plurality. The truth is that while everyone wants to blame "neverTrump" on "the elites" or "the GOP-E", it wouldn't have any power unless there were a lot of other rank and file Republican voters who absolutely detest Trump. Those people are also "lifelong Republican voters". My mom voted for Goldwater, and she has said there's no way she'd vote for Trump. I know a lot of folks who feel the same, and they're not "the elites". They're just ordinary people.

The reality is that the party isn't just divided between "the elites" and "the masses". The masses themselves are divided, and there's really no way to fix that. A very large group of "lifelong Republican voters" are going to be very dissatisfied with the nominee no matter who it is.

For the party establishment itself (as opposed to all the GOP elected officials in Congress who have their own opinions as well), that's a huge problem that RNC really can't resolve.

As an entity, the GOP is screwed either way.
