Libertarians who aren’t

I spent most of the last year as a registered, card-carrying, dues-paying Libertarian Party member. I recently dropped out and went back to Unaffiliated—partly because the Libertarian Party has nothing to do with liberty and partly because they provide even less opportunity for the rank-and-file to participate than the Colorado Banana Republican Party.

Even as a registered, card-carrying, dues-paying Libertarian Party member who got lots of emails from state and national party leaders, I was not privy to whatever system they used for nominating Gary Johnson. (I'm not implying that their other candidates were any better.) As near as I can tell, they had a convention in some part of the state that was too far away to attend and only those physically present had any say. This is like the system the Colorado Banana Republicans used, but with even less of a pretense that the rank-and-file was involved. It looks like the attendees of the state convention who decided everything were simply those who lived closest to the convention site and had the spare time to attend.
