A Hell of a Rifle

Back at Shot Show 2017 on media day at the range once again preceded the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas, and it gave outdoor and gun writers – including yours truly – the opportunity to press a lot of triggers.

One experience I won't soon forget is the all-too-brief time I spent at the Browning display because the centerpiece of that exhibit was a brand-new entry in the X-Bolt family they call the Hell's Canyon Long Range rifle. It's a gem.

Keep in mind, this is the 100th anniversary of the famous Browning Automatic Rifle, and the company chose the occasion to introduce a BAR Safari model, a handsome self-loader chambered in .30-06 Sprg. Only 100 of these guns were made to commemorate this centennial anniversary, and they’re likely all gone by now. So, for the people who want a rifle to shoot rather than admire in a display case, the Hell's Canyon Long Range is just the ticket. Read the rest of the story here.

What most people don’t realize is that ANY new, brand name bolt action rifle can give you sub-MOA accuracy.

It’s just a matter of finding the right bullet weight for that particular barrel.

I have a Winchester model 70 feather weight in 30.06...one of the newer ones (2002).

It’s consistently at .70 at 100yrds, but only with 180gr bullets. Any other bullet weight and it can spread as much as 4 inches at 100yds.

You need to know which weight synchs with YOUR barrel’s “ring”.

Try loading your own and that .70 will shrink. It's not just the weight of the bullet. I have very accurate loads for my .308 using 150, 165, 168, and 175 grain bullets.

Do you have a heavy barrel on your .308?

As far as I know that’s the only way to achieve consistent accuracy across multiple bullet weights.

I do load my own.

“Ring?”
We have to talk.

Barrel resonance.

Every barrel vibrates at a frequency when a bullet pass through it.

You want the bullet to leave the barrel at the crest of the sine wave on either side of that vibration.

Different bullet weights, different “ring” frequencies.

That is why all sniper barrels are very heavy bull barrels...they don’t change point of aim with that vibration.

Different bullet weights, different “ring” frequencies. And different barrels have different frequencies generated by the same bullet.

With a lightweight barrel you want the bullet and the barrel to match.

That is why all sniper barrels are very heavy bull barrels...they don’t change point of aim with that vibration.

No thank you. I'm just enough of a traditionalist to stick with the original, with one change. I'll pull the zigzag flat spring steel magazine springs out, and replace them with FN-D model BAR coil-wound magazine springs, or FN-FAL springs.

Thanks...
Very interesting
I’m a radio guy and antennas and cable
length are tuned to the frequency.
Kind of a “ring.”
Now if I can figure out how I can make
my M1A work...can’t hit Crap with it!

Hand load or buy 20 rounds each of 147, 150 and 165 grain .308 and one of them will give you at least a 2inch group at 100 yards if you are scoped.

If just peep sights, 4-5 inches is good enough:)

Also check your suppressor for internal marks. Sometime they are not put on perfectly and slightly deflect your bullets hither and there and everywhere. I’ve seen that one on an AK.

Hit accurately with it’s 16.5 barrel.
Love That one!
I will dust off that Springfield,
Thanks.

16.5 in barrel limits the Scout to about 2000-2150fps with standard NATO 7.62x51 mm.

Truly effective range is only about 200yds, though you could stretch to 400yds if you shoot 6 feet high. Or 8.

The M1A with 20 or 22in barrel will have much greater range and accuracy over 200yds if you find which round rings with your barrel.

Try a broad mix of these (weight is all that’s important when tuning) then invest in what works perfectly.

140, 145, 150, 165, 168 etc.

And with an M1A you have a patriotic duty to stock at least 1,000 rounds of what works with your rifle.

For you or your posterity...or neighbor.

It would be perfect if it liked standard issue military ammo. But that’s not always the case.

My dad carried 3 different M-1 Garands in Korea. He told me one was dead-on accurate. One was all over the place and the other was just barely OK.

And that was all about barrel resonance with a given bullet.
