The New York Times Keeps Up Fake Tweet Comparing Trump & Obama Patriots Visit Despite Correction
Donald Trump For President Blog ^ | April 21, 2017 | Pinkbell

The New York Times has left up a false Tweet repudiated by the Patriots comparing team size between the New England Patriots White House visit under President Trump and former President Obama.

On April the 19th, President Trump welcomed the Super Bowl 51 Champion New England Patriots to the White House.  The media watched this event carefully and not because they desired to watch the celebration but because Trump is a polarizing figure that they can't stand, and they were hoping as few players as possible would show up.

In earnest, the New York Times went digging for pictures of former President Obama with the Patriots and seemed, on initial glance, to hit pay dirt.  The New York Times Sports Twitter account Tweeted out this picture:

Patriots' turnout for President Obama in 2015 vs. Patriots' turnout for President Trump today: https://t.co/OxMEOqZonI pic.twitter.com/pLmJWhOw1j— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 19, 2017

The picture obviously shows a smaller crowd for President Trump.  Liberals retweeted the picture with glee.  However, what the New York Times wasn't counting on, was the fact that Bob Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, is good friends with President Trump.  He was not about to allow this to stand.  The Patriots then fact checked the New York Times.  Retweeting the photo and adding a photo of their own, they added:

Patriots' turnout for President Obama in 2015 vs. Patriots' turnout for President Trump today: https://t.co/OxMEOqZonI pic.twitter.com/pLmJWhOw1j— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 19, 2017

They continued:

Patriots' turnout for President Obama in 2015 vs. Patriots' turnout for President Trump today: https://t.co/OxMEOqZonI pic.twitter.com/pLmJWhOw1j— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 19, 2017

One has to wonder, of course, if the New York Times has ever compared visits of the same sports team under different Presidents in the past.  Did they compare the Patriots under former Presidents Obama and Bush?

The New York Times Sports, clearly realizing they had been caught, issued a correction Tweet:

UPDATE: Patriots say # of players was smaller this year than 2015 (34 vs. 50) but total delegation was roughly the same. pic.twitter.com/Ij77Def8z5— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 20, 2017

Now, when the NY Times Sports issued the correction retweet, if my memory serves me correctly, the Tweet comparing the photos had around 30,000 RTs.  As long as a Tweet is left up, people can continue to RT it and spread it.  The correction is not attached to the Tweet so there is no way that people who Retweet it would even know of it.  They won't see the correction unless they specifically go to the New York Times Sports Twitter account, and why would they do that when they are unware it is inaccurate?

As of now, the Tweet is still up, being circulated, and has 51,000 RTs.  Guess how many the correction Tweet has?  771,000.  Peanuts.

The New York Times Sports editor issued an apology which stated:

"Bad Tweet by me.  Terrible Tweet.  I wish I could say it's complicated, but no, this one is pretty straightforward: I'm an idiot.  It was my idea, my execution, it was my blunder.  I made a decision in about four minutes that clearly warranted much more time.  Once we learned more we tried to fix everything as much as possible as swiftly as possible and as transparently as possible.  Of course, at that point the damage was done.  I just needed to own it."

Gee!  I wonder what the rush was?  I wonder why he dreamed up the idea to do this and was so eager he didn't fact check?  Could it be the New York Times is biased?  Nah!  Of course not.  He says they tried to fix it as "swiftly" and "transparently" as possible.  Leaving up the fake Tweet to continue to be Retweeted does not achieve that objective.

The New York Times still remained focused on who showed up and who protested Trump.  The New York Times Sports account Tweeted out this article in the New York Times entitled "Tom Brady Skips White House Visit Along With Numerous Teammates":

Some Patriots skipped the White House visit for political reasons while Tom Brady cited "personal family matters" https://t.co/QtBUykCgqg— NYT Sports (@NYTSports) April 20, 2017

The New York Times wasn't alone.  A commentator posing as a journalist named Don Lemon over at CNN did an interview with a player who wouldn't go because he had never heard a guy say something as terrible as what Donald Trump said on the Access Hollywood tape.  I'm certain Don Lemon did not invite a Patriots player who went and had a good time, but correct me if I'm wrong:

http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2017/04/20/alan-branch-patriots-white-house-visit-intv-ctn.cnn

He was topped by Max Kellerman on ESPN (Skip Bayless is sorely missed):

When the press corps is cracking up at a press secretary because of an athlete’s presence there, so he’s lending something to the proceedings, the athlete is, and the press corps is, you know, they’re having a rollicking good time, they’re really laughing at a press secretary who in his first press conference, demonstrably lied, shot credibility, I mean your job is to establish credibility with the national media, and completely shot it since his first press conference and it’s gone downhill since there, by the way.

In a scary way, incidentally, especially when there’s a lot of uncertainty about a very unusual administration, how much authoritarian impulse is there — well, when the press secretary comes out and says what you know as a fact is not a fact because now we’re giving you alternative facts, eventually was the phrase, that’s a scary thing. Like wait, what’s going on here? They think that they can just say anything and we’re supposed to take it as true. When that guy is normalized and the press is yukking it up, that’s a very bad thing. That’s an unhealthy thing to have happened.

http://www.breitbart.com/video/2017/04/20/espns-kellerman-gronkowski-popping-into-wh-press-briefing-normalizes-sean-spicer-patriots-shouldve-boycotted-trip/

This guy uses a Sports program to say the President of the United States (who was elected) should not be "normalized."  Having heard other sports commentators that day bringing politics in it, and they all seemed liberal, I (who rarely watches the sports media) was disgusted to see that they are as a liberal and biased as the political press.

It's unfortunate that politics must be brought into sports now.  The media is so full of disdain for Trump that they glorify sports players who don't show up for a White House visit and make negative connotations towards those who they perceive too close to him.  That's why I believe Tom Brady didn't show up, and Rush Limbaugh essentially confirmed it by saying he had another "theory" why Tom Brady wasn't there but couldn't say by inferring that he was given info by those in the know (he knows Kraft).  He knew that his mother was ill and in town and that it was his parents' anniversary for a while, so why push it to the last minute?  The team was presumably only going to spend a half day in DC visiting the White House.  If it was truly his mother, Trump would have mentioned him, offered him his well wishes, and praised how well he played, but Trump didn't mention him at all.  He's supposed to be Trump's friend, and Trump praised him effusively during the campaign, so it makes no sense for Trump not to mention the MVP of the game when talking about the accomplishments of individual players.

To top it off, his wife doesn't like Trump, responding "No!" when asked if they voted for him.  She Tweeted at the SAME TIME the players were at the White House:

Supermodel and philanthropist Gisele Bündchen tweeted a link to an April protest against President Trump and his climate policies at the same time Wednesday that her husband, NFL quarterback Tom Brady, was missing the New England Patriots' visit to the White House.

On April 29th in Washington- D.C. - March for climate, jobs, and justice. To change everything, we need everyone. https://t.co/dZaRiXQV46 — Gisele Bündchen (@giseleofficial) April 19, 2017

The tweet links to a video promoting the People’s Climate March, a Washington, D.C., protest planned to coincide with Trump’s 100th day in office.

http://thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/329603-gisele-buchanan-tweets-support-of-climate-change-march

I wish his mother a full recovery, and if I am wrong, I apologize, but I am skeptical.

We conclude with the realization that if the New York Times will lie about a photo to bash Trump, what else will they lie about?  We also have to realize this is only the beginning.  Every sports team that visits the White House from here on out will be scrutinized, and the media will analyze how many attend, how many attended under Obama, and give glowing interviews to the heroes that don't attend.

The only silver lining in all this.  The lie the NYT left up has 51,000 RTs.  The Patriots correction Tweet has 68,000.   Small victories, but we'll take it.

Looking this over, I'm technologically inept, and my embedded Tweets did not turn out right. Here are the correct Tweets from the Patriots:

These photos lack context. Facts: In 2015, over 40 football staff were on the stairs. In 2017, they were seated on the South Lawn. https://t.co/iIYtV0hR6Y— New England Patriots (@Patriots) April 20, 2017

And

Comparable photos: The last time the #Patriots won two Super Bowls in three years, 36 players visited the White House. Today, we had 34. pic.twitter.com/Aslvf1RaXU— New England Patriots (@Patriots) April 20, 2017

Corrected on blog. I wish FR had an edit function.

Are black NFL players racist? Why do they refuse to meet with a white President?

They have been culturally plantationized since early childhood to regard Republicans as the wrong political party for them...also intellectually we're not dealing with a lot of deep thinkers here...NFL linemen you know!

NYT has no shame. They still display the Walter Duranty Pulitzer Prize.
