This is a big story in my area.

This is a particularly heinous "cultural activity". This "doctor" and anyone else involved should be tried and punished to the full extent of the law. She was educated at one of the finest medical schools in the US and works at one of the top hospitals in Michigan. Unfortunately she cannot and will not be deported because she is not an immigrant. She was born in Washington, DC, USA.

I read a book about FGM back in the ‘90s. It took me days to get over the horrible feelings that it left me with. (I can only recall a similar reaction to one other book - one about the atrocities committed by the Castro regime against dissidents.)

This is NOT in any way analogous to male circumcision as generally practiced, and does not only impact female sexual pleasure. Many of these women suffer serious health problems for the rest of their lives because of it.

(I can’t even imagine the MENTAL health problems.)

There is a huge problem with this already in Europe. Thousands of ER cases in Liverpool England each year because of the Muslim population.

Often these children are maimed by their own mothers and female relatives.

This should be prosecuted as a crime AT LEAST on the same level as violently raping a child.

Here is another African custom called Mingi.

Mingi — a concept so taboo that the word is rarely spoken aloud in the Omo Valley — is the belief that a baby is "cursed" if it is born out of wedlock or, even more bizarrely, if the child's top teeth appear before the bottom teeth.

Children declared mingi are thought to bring drought, famine or disease to the tribe — so they are killed.
