A lesson can be learned from the heroic actions of the Capitol Police in the baseball park assassination attempt.
When it is time to shoot, shoot. The time to negotiate has ended when you are in the middle of a firefight. From heavy.com:
Fillus said a police agent pulled out a gun and tried to shoot back. She was screaming, Drop your weapon! And he shot her and she fell on the ground.Police have been trained to command a suspect to "drop the weapon". In combat, you drop to the level of your training. In this case it did not work well. The officer shouting the commands drew fire, and was shot. Fortunately, it was not a fatal wound. It appears to have taken her out of the fight, at least for a time.
She fell on the ground in front of us, and we were all just trying to lay as flat we could. And I belly crawled, dragging through the mud. I got to the car and I ducked under the car and I laid as close as I could under the car to hide from the person. Then the police seemed to come.
The lesson learned from Han Solo when meeting Vader in Cloud City.
“He didn’t ask questions, he didn’t even care. He just shot him. Didn’t look for dialogue, didn’t look for a reason. He knew Vader was the bad guy so he pulled out his gun and shot at him. And didn’t stop either.”
“You have the right to lay on the ground and bleed. If you choose to give up this right you can lie of the ground and ooze for all I care....”
Han shot Greedo, too.
And “yes”: Han shot first. Greedo deserved it.
Roger that Dean. Nobody wants to be in that position (well most folks) but if you’ve got a perp with gun drawn and “beading” on folks or actively shooting, don’t yell “DROP THE GUN!” Pull the trigger.
Han was not stupid.
BANGBANG! BANG! Stop or I’ll shoot. ;)
Shoot and talk. Talking creates witnesses.
Spoiler alert!!

I suppose singing the Beatles, “All You Need Is Love” in a pleading voice is also out of the question?
I wondered why the per shot ting at Scalise, etc had as much time as he did...this explains it.
Again!
And then there are those Capitol Police who, a few years ago, shot and killed the young lady who made a wrong turn. The cover up continues to this day
We had a case here in Santa Rosa, police officer shot a 12 year old with a AK-47 lookalike Airsoft (tip either removed or repainted); killed the kid as he started to turn around. Lots of community trauma still. If the person is actively shooting, sure, but some of the statements in this article seem to confuse a military firefight against known enemies with the duties and responsibilities of a Public Servant when interacting with citizens, at least in one possible interpretation. In other words, better be COMPLETELY certain that it is time to shoot if one is going to do so with no warning or command or one’s career and community are going to pay the price.
I get the point of the article, but I think it makes assumptions about the situational awareness and actors that are not always applicable to police V citizen interactions.
I carry daily, my self defense weapon is my version of the AEX ad, ‘Don’t leave home without it’.
Like the ‘man’ says, two things in life you probably will never need but always good to have on hand.
A parachute & a pistol.
My personal ‘rule of thumb’ is if my finger rests on the trigger, the talk etc is over, it is time to fire.
A couple of years ago I had run off a couple of kids that were defacing a building I had ‘control’ over.
One went running home and told his parents ‘some crazy white dude was chasing us with a gun’
I am sitting in my house and answer a knock on the door and am greeted by the Swat team, several LEOs and a rash of angry parents/guardians in the background.
They just asked me to step outside (NO storming the premises, no slamming me to the ground, a quick pat down by the officer & deputy at the door and asked me to come outside.
They explained the situation which I immediately denied and I used the explanation that if I would have had drawn down on the lad, I definitely would have fired etc etc.
Several of the tenants backed up my version of the incident and even the ‘bystanders’ were convinced and everything ended up then and there.
Luckily EVERYTHING went the way it should have. Police called, can imagine if the MOB had pounded on my door before the Police and we can play out a much different scenario in our minds.
I carry everywhere, no matter what state I am in and the best analysis I can come up with is that somehow, where one is ALLOWED to carry (I do have proper permits etc) the need is very small.
However, where it is ‘illegal’ for me to carry, the need seems much greater but being ‘unable’ to carry makes me a better driver, better citizen and ‘forces’ me to REALLY be aware of where I am at, the last thing I need to do is get myself in a position where I am to be pulled over or ‘frisked’.
The old ‘better be judged by twelve than carried by six’ is foremost in my mind....
I agree wholeheartedly with this advice to non-LEO’s who are legally carrying in order to respond to a deadly force threat. When it’s time to shoot, the time for talking has past.
I also think that cops are trained to respond verbally at the same time because of the inevitable lawsuits they will face, whether or not the perp survives.
I’ve heard that Newbies in prison are taught to sweet/calmly talk to the armed homeowner who has the drop on them, and then, as they coo, take baby steps towards them until within arms reach and then grab the gun.
I have told my wife that, God forbid, she is ever in that situation, get in the mindset to just shoot, never mind that baby steps which would be the “flares in the sky” alert that if she doesn’t act, she will probably die.
Initially deer-in-headlights reaction until I showed her how I could baby step right up to her.
Classic line from “ The Good, the bad and the Ugly”.
