Buck Decoy Illegally shot by a 13 Yr old Boy

Chalk up another win for the roadside buck decoy. IDNR (Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police) looks to stop roadside hunting and poaching, and this tool always seems to get the job done. Just ask this young boy (and his grandfather). If you devote countless hours of work, sweat, and thought to your deer hunting, stories of illegal hunting and poaching irk you like nothing else in this world. Illinois Department of Resources officers are often on the lookout to stop these things, and man did they get this one quick.

According the the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Facebook page, CPO’s Michael Goetten and Chris Gushleff are pictured with a new deer decoy donated by the United Bow Hunters of Illinois (UBI) to combat illegal road hunting. Read the rest of the 13 yr old boy shoots at a buck decoy shot story here.

Illinois does this a fair amount. Many years ago they had a poacher who repeatedly fired at a decoy until he blew the head off and then he ran it over.

I was taught to observe the target for 10 seconds wit the naked eye, 10 seconds through glass, and 10 seconds through the sights. That gives you time to observe the background for a safe shot either blow through or miss. Then observe the target to make sure it is legal, and then finally align the placement of the shot.

I don’t think being a bad dad is against the law. I get your point though, he is certainly aiding and abetting.

I’ve seen this on some police show (Alaska State Troopers or something). Your tax dollars at work. Two to three troopers, averaging probably $70,000 a year, spending several hours sitting in their trucks hoping some drunk idiot shoots at their fake deer so they can write them a ticket. Very impressive.

The police have too big of a budget if this is what they have time for. My tax dollars can be better spent

I’m so glad that in the state of Illinois or that day there were no murders rapes assaults property crimes child abuse or elderly abuse and that The state decided to spend its resources on this noble endeavor

Low lifes that will shoot illegally also will ride at night spotlighting and shoot pastured horses or cows just for fun. This type of enforcement is much needed.

“I don’t think being a bad dad is against the law.”

Yeah it kinda is. If dad was there, and let his 13 year old commit a crime, that’s called contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

We can agree to disagree. I think they are out there with a deer not a cow or a horse. If you ant more $100k + government employees out there doing this then hire private security. Otherwise Illinois is bankrupt and needs to stop justifying their government employment numbers. So we agree to disagree you want more I want less.

A buddy of mine took a shot at one one morning on his way in to hunt. He was subjected to endless ridicule.

On my first elk hunt I spent an hour tracking some in the mud and snow. Then I could hear them. I crept slowing along the edge of the trail and peeked my head past the large set of boulders that opened up into a grassy field. And there they were - maybe 10 cows. As in cattle - beef!

I had a good laugh at myself! And wondered what these cows were doing up so high at this time of year!

Yep - my heart was racing as I heard them and got closer!!

I recall the time my dad and I were driving and saw a herd of deer. No guns or anything - I was maybe 12 or so. So he drives back along the road and positions me in a small pile of a few downed trees. Then goes up to drive this herd of deer towards me - just because.

Narrow strip of grass/pasture - woods on one side, fence and road on the other. I recall it felt like forever.

Then I hear the deer, and then see them. Coming right at me. I ducked under one of the logs and they just jumped right over that log pile and all around me.

Neither my dad or I were anticipating that - we figured they would run to the side of the pile! Pretty exciting for a kid! “Well - just don’t tell your mother.”

“contributing to the delinquency of a minor”
Same thing as aiding and abetting.

My first deer hunting trip after I got my license at twelve was a lot of fun. Dad, my two older brothers and dad’s buddy Bob set me on a stump and they spread out on this yarder setting. Last thing dad said was if it’s got horns shoot it. About an hour later they jumped a huge bull elk that came right past me. Bobby immediately started yelling “don’t shoot, don’t shoot”. I knew the difference but afterwards dad was laughing about Bob freaking out and said “you should have dropped the SOB”. Bob would have come unglued.
