Japan desperately trying to figure out America’s sudden obsession with Schezuan sauce

You know your country has done something really weird when it ends up on the morning news in Japan.

Sometimes strange Japanese trends confuse the rest of the world, but right now the tables have turned and it’s an American trend that is confusing Japan.

Recently McDonald’s announced that they would be releasing a limited supply of Schezuan dipping sauce. The campaign was born from an episode of the show Rick and Morty where the mad scientist Rick goes on a tangent about how his life’s purpose is to obtain “that Mulan Schezuan teriyaki dipping sauce.”

Rick’s goal to find the sauce quickly became the goal of many of the show’s fans too, so much so that McDonald’s finally decided to re-release the sauce in limited supply on October 7 after a public outcry....

Well, that’s a culturally insensitive way to keep Chinese and Japanese out of McDonald’s...Sichuan is Chinese, Teriyaki is Japanese...kinda like how Chinese folks remember their history and don’t usually drive Japanese cars...

I think the writers let the mainstream popularity go to their heads, and thought if they became more zany, it would meet the expectations of their meteoric rise and their new, more insane, fans.

I can tell the storytelling of the first 2 seasons has taken a real hit.

To ‘H’ with a sauce (Schezuan) which is obviously more Chinese than Japanese! For me, if I am talking about something genuinely Japanese, give me the real stuff, give me WASABI! Don’t pawn off your horseradish or the fakes, give me that stuff that gives me hairy eyeballs!
