From what I’ve read, working in the abortion industry exacts a high toll from many.

Most of those folks aren't constantly being praised by the ultra-left, either. Wouldn't it be possible for constant praise and lionizing by the left to help someone in that position to suppress her misgivings for a prolonged period of time, versus someone whose only encouragement to stay in that kind of work is the people around her (who are also in the position of rationalizing murders that they know are wrong)?
