I finally watched it today. It is not a hilarious comedy as the trailer suggests. It is a very very black comedy as everything in this movie really happened and the atmosphere it hints at without going too dark is very real.
Perhaps this is a good way to teach this part of the history so far often neglected. The kids and adults will see this movie and think it was over the top and then will seek more information only to learn that this is how insane that horror really was and the movie was basically the exact retelling.
No wonder the Kremlin banned it from futhet screenings...

I recommend “The Inner Circle”, or “Stalin” w/Robert Duvall.
I am cautiously optimistic here. I think the film-makers expected that an unaccompanied liberal will just dismiss it as over the top slander, but they will do it loudly and thus can be challenged.
They have been writing articles showing that one and other and in the end every outrageous episode of the film is what really happened and the film-makers were actually holding back in showing how horrible the reality was.

I always thought that Peter Ustinov would have made a good Stalin in a movie. Too bad he never played him. Chaim Topol would also have been good.
It was in theaters at least 2 weeks ago, but I “purchased” it online by swashbuckler ways. Watching it on my computer was better for me as I often paused it to check the internet for history records.
