A senior Canadian officer will become the deputy commander of the United Nations force in Korea, Canada's Department of National Defence said Monday.

Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre will become the first non-U.S. general officer to hold the post since the international headquarters command was created 68 years ago.

He takes up the appointment ahead of a historic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

The United Nations Command oversees the multinational forces who fought the Korean War between 1950-53 and serves as the mechanism through which nations can be recalled should fighting erupt on the contested peninsula.

The organization has — since the late 1970s — taken a bit of a back seat since the South Koreans and the U.S. took more direct control for the defence of the country....

It is symbolic and will not command anything is a fight. Nothing to see here.

We’ve had some great generals, but these days they seem to be politicians.

We have had a string of Canadian Generals get developmental assignments with US Forces over the years. Deputy CG of Third Corps at Ft.Hood, or DCG of a US Division is not uncommon. It gives Canadian officers an additional opportunity for promotion and higher level experience, while keeping a warm bench of talent, in case of contingency.

A lot of planning and prep goes into making sure that US and Canadian forces are interoperable, so we can work together when needed - including developing people. If a particularly good Canadian is noted coming up in the ranks, they can sometimes make even an extra space in a senior command. NORAD is a relationship like we have with no other country.

Many in the upper ranks of Canada’s military are REMFs.

Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre is not one of them.

He came by his training honestly in the Scottish traditional battalions of Western Canada.

I don’t know the guy, but I seriously doubt that he got this job, without people watching him and considering him and talking about him over a period of several years, and multiple assignments.

It reflects really well on him as an individual, to be selected for this job.
