The Trump administration today charged Facebook Inc. with violating housing discrimination laws.
The social media company allows advertisers to divert housing listings away users who mention terms such as assistance dog and mobility scooter, or who live in certain zip codes, in violation of the Fair Housing Act, HUD alleged.
In addition, the Justice Department today joined a lawsuit against Facebook, saying in a statement of interest that the company discriminates by helping advertisers pick preferred users.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing transactions including print and online advertisement on the basis of race, religion or sex, among other things. Facebook allows advertisers to pinpoint certain potential tenants or homebuyers while filtering out others, HUD alleged.
When Facebook uses the vast amount of personal data it collects to help advertisers to discriminate, it's the same as slamming the door in someone's face, said Anna María Farías, HUD's assistant secretary for fair housing and equal opportunity.
A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement: "There is no place for discrimination on Facebook; its strictly prohibited in our policies, adding that the company will respond to DOJ's statement of interest in court.
Make them play by their own rules.
I’m popping some Jiffy-Pop as I read this. It could get fun!
Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly love President Trump even more....
I hope...sincerely hope...Facebook’s high-powered lawyers didn’t see that coming...
We may never know,
The 9th circus will be twisted into a knot: evil corporation vs. socialist media.
War declared on social justice warriors.
Saul Alinsky says: Make them live up to their own book of rules !
Go Trump !
Made my evening. Go Trump!!
Omg childhood memory alert! I should buy some soon!
And I quit facebook ages ago.
But but but it’s a private site they can do what they want they said. smh.
Who you rent to should be your choice.
LinkedIn likely next as it allows similar filtering.
And welfare payments to individuals are unconstitutional. The income tax is unconstitutional. First we make them live by the laws they meant for us. Then we can change those laws. Trust the Plan!
Some pretty basic stuff that should raise alarm bells for any publication but Farcebook accepted the adds with question.
"....Last week, ProPublica bought dozens of rental housing ads on Facebook, but asked that they not be shown to certain categories of users, such as African Americans, mothers of high school kids, people interested in wheelchair ramps, Jews, expats from Argentina and Spanish speakers. All of these groups are protected under the federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to publish any advertisement with respect to the sale or rental of a dwelling that indicates any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin. Violators can face tens of thousands of dollars in fines. Every single ad was approved within minutes...." https://www.propublica.org/article/facebook-advertising-discrimination-housing-race-sex-national-origin
And this article is from November 2017, so it's been going on for a long time.
We all know the non-discrimination thingy doesn't apply if you are a conservative.
Seems it also doesn't apply if you are paying for an ad?
"Do as I say, not as I do."
Of course. It's owned by Microsoft and the holier than thou Gates and Ballmer.
LinkedIn is a pain in the ass. Every day I get an email from them trying to get me to give them every fact about me so they share it with the world.
Also, they give me the craziest jobs I might be interested in, based on a sophisticated algorithm or just throwing shit at me and hoping something sticks.
Here's a recent list: Mechanical Design Engineer, Analyst/Configuration IT PLM, Executive Administrative Assistant, Market Intelligence Analyst, Financial Analyst, Manager Customer Experience, Recruiter Entry Level, Administrative Assistant 1, Technical Sales Representative, Senior Staff Accountant, Production Graphic Designer & In-House Photographer, Latin America Region Specialist, QTV Motion Graphic Designer / Animator, Assistant Underwriter, RN: Registered Nurse, Human Resources Generalist, Kitchen Manager, Summer Internship, Transportation Manager, Major Accounts Sales Executive, CDL Driver, Utility Locator, Climbing Arborist/Foreman, Tile Sales/Design Consultant, Physician, and a list that appears to go off into infinity.
I'm torn between applying for Kitchen Manager or Physician. They think there is even a tiny possibility that I am qualified for all of these jobs? If that were true, I would be the most incredible human to every live.
Oh boy. Considering Trump was accused of discrimination of renters in the 80s, this is going to raise a shitstorm.
