Problem was incorrect twist in barrel .Caused bullet to keyhole on target.

Yes, sadly, very sadly. Odd bunch that back east crowd.

No bueno. .22 mag overall case length is too long relative to the energy generated by the low powered round to reliably cycle the slide in semi auto. .22 mag is a revolver only round.

Kel-Tec deals with the case length issue by using shallow chamber fluting to help "float" the case during extraction. It makes for a dirtier pistol, but it works. I have had a PMR-30 (Gen 2) since 2016, apart from a few hiccups during the first few magazines of ammo, it has functioned perfectly (about 1,200 rounds through it thus far).

Most of Kel-Tec's problems with the gun could've been solved by tweaking the feed ramp and chamber throat. If they paid a tech to spend ten minutes more per unit, just polishing the feed ramp and chamfering the bottom chamber edge, the company would have far fewer returns of these pistols.

It would seem to be a world beater but there are a few things which keep it from being that.

First of all, the .22 magnum does not work well in pistol length barrels. In a 20-24 inch rifle barrel it produces energy nearly equal to the 9mm. In a 6 inch barrel it is not too much more powerful than a .22LR.

In a one and a half inch barrel it is not much more powerful than a .22 short, both out of the same barrel. I know, because I have chronographed them.

There is one way it truly impressed me. I shot a cottonmouth from a small rural dirt road bridge in the middle of nowhere. This was with a Ruger single six using CCI shot shells with the plastic shot holder. The distance was about six feet and it almost literally shredded the snake. Way better than the LR shot shells.

I just sold my PMR 30 and bought a Walther CCP .9mm.

The PMR was an impulse buy that I ended up waiting 1.5 years for delivery on back order. Its accurate and has good fiber optic sights but it’s louder than a you know what, throws a 12 inch muzzle flash and is a picky eater. If you don’t want FTF problems you have to use CCI maximags or Hornady V-Max. It’s OK to plink around with at the range but I wouldn’t trust my safety with it. Loving my new Walther.

If yours works for you, great, but I lost confidence in mine.

I loved my Keltec RFB 308 bullpup. Put about 3,500 rounds through it. Then one day about near zero F firing a 3 gun match in an ice fog the selector switch froze(ice) in the fire position. I live in Alaska...sold it immediately.

RFB DEMO

These types of little problems that lead to bigger ones seem to be a recurring theme with Kel Tec. They would benefit a lot from a massive upgrade in environmental testing.

When they get it right however, it's magic. My concealed EDC is the super safe and reliable compact PF9.

Kel Tec comes up with some very neat ideas but their execution is lacking.

One might get a good one, one might get a bad one there lies the trouble with the Kel Tec brand.

All that being said, I admire George Kellegran’s way, WAY out-of-the-box designs. In an industry where 90% of companies just copy the designs of Browning, Glock and a few others, he comes up with wildly original ideas.
