I suspect the researchers and bureaucrats are the winners of this project. The article doesn’t say what the total cost of the program is, but I suspect UBI recipients will be getting less than the people running the program.

we don’t have a good example in the US of what happens when you give money without conditions,” says economic journalist Annie Lowrey, whose just-released book, Give People Money, explores the outcomes of UBI projects across the world. “Because we don’t have that research here, it still feels like it’s out of the realm of the possible, but it’s not so uncertain what people will do with the money.”

You should fear for this country, 2DV. When morons like this who claim to be an "economic journalist" don't realize that a large number of people will spend UBI on cigarettes and Thunderbird wine, we're truly in danger of losing our country, and ultimately our peace, prosperity and freedom, to socialism.

The Puritans/Pilgrims tried socialism at first but no one would work the plots of “communal” land so they gave out the plots to the families and said you’re on your own food-wise.

If it happens, I hope it’s not until I’m in Heaven....unless it happens in less than 15 years....;-]

“We know a lot about what happens when you give people money through programs like TANF [Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or welfare, as it’s more commonly known] and EITC [Earned Income Tax Credit], but we don’t have a good example in the US of what happens when you give money without conditions,” says economic journalist Annie Lowrey

We give people TANF, and EITC … and Medicaid … and housing assistance … and WIC … and Food Stamps/SNAP … and a bazillion other, smaller welfare payments.

What don't we know?

Some people use public assistance as it is intended to be used, to patch over rough stretches of their lives and get back on their feet as soon as they can. Good for them.

Other people retire on benefits and coast. And have children that they teach to live on benefits while resenting the people who pay taxes to feed them.

A middle group fully intends to work hard and pull themselves up but finds that their day-to-day incentives are steadily eroded as they adjust to life on the dole, and they fall into the welfare trap.

UBI is simply a different shade of lipstick on the same pig. The problem is moral hazard. UBI will be defended by cherry picking examples from the first group of hard-working, hustling poor, who are struggling to do the right thing. They make sympathetic case studies. But they aren't the problem cases, and the success or failure of any welfare reform must be measured by how it deals with the problem cases.

It's impossible to get any further Left than The Nation. This is what we should expect from their fuzzy-headed way of thinking.

They make this UBI thing sound like some brilliant solution to disparity or unequal incomes.

If they get their way, everyone will be poor and no one will want to work to pay for others to subsist from their hard labors.

This country was founded on equal opportunity, not guaranteed incomes.

Down here in northwest Florida, the touris season was always a summer phenomenon with everything dead in the winter. Then Canada went to their socialized medicine and we immediately began to have a winter season of Canadians. The beach resorts have been year round since then with the Canadians coming here to get their medical needs taken care of.In Canada everyone has the right to be put on an interminable waiting list.

Too many of those “struggling” tend to have big screen tvs, new vehicles, bling and a mountain of fast food trash on their kitchen counters.

“Funny how you never hear of “Universal Basic Effort”

No more calls, folks. We have a winner.

Of course, that money would be used to buy medicine for sick grannies and a new crutch to replace Tiny Tim’s termite-eaten old one. It would never be used to buy drugs or bling or guns or anything like that. No sir!

What it boils down to is that people who believe in this, also believe that the government creates wealth.

And we all know how that works out when you let those people run governments.

Define basic. If it is zero, yes.

Maybe they could ask the people of Finland, who experimented with a UBI, and learned it was a failure.

Something that leftists understand is that if you penalize people for doing something, they will do less of it. For some reason, they don’t seem to get that the converse is true as well. When you reward a certain behavior, you get more of it.

Or it could be a simpler thing... The best way to completely control every aspect of one’s life is to make them completely dependent on you. And that’s one thing leftists desire.

Offer Free Gold Bars and there would still be complaints, abuse and poverty. Full scale handouts are not the solution. If Jesus had spoken plainly rather then in parables, we would have been feeding the populace the word of God so they could be good strong farmers and workers who produce and feed food to their own people.

Cities across the US are declaring unicorns to be “real”, hoping that by doing so they and other magical creatures will appear, and make all their dreams come true, at no cost.

Aha, now I do grasp what has happened to Stockton:

About an hour and a half northeast of Silicon Valley, the small city of Stockton, California, still hasn’t recovered from the financial crisis. Many homes remain in foreclosure, and unemployment—which peaked at 19 percent in early 2011—remains among the highest in the country. When Mayor Michael Tubbs took office in 2017, the then-26-year-old pledged to bring new jobs and opportunities to the city’s poor, who at the time made up about a quarter of the population. “I grew up in a working-class, working-poor family. My mom was on welfare for the first seven years of my life,” Mayor Tubbs says. “Issues of economic security are personal to me, and it’s important to use my platform to talk about the plight of the majority of people in our country who are really struggling.”

The real estate bust was the final straw. White people left in numbers large enough to be called ‘white flight’. The Mexican invaders were already moving in and their numbers boomed with land lords desperate to rent or empty houses available to squatters. Now between the blackamoors and the Mexicans there are enough voters to elevate Mr. Tubbs, a genuine SJW, to the mayor's office. His brilliant ideas will just push Stockton further under water. Amazing in 40 + years the city has gone from one with the highest rates of home ownership and highest median home prices to a Turd World Sh*thole.

I can imagine. My Canadian daughter-in-law step father needed by pass surgery a few years ago. He would have had to wait six months to get on a waiting list to be put on to another list to get the surgery done. They came here, to Scotsdale, Ar. where they live six months out of the year(nice huh?) and he got it done in three weeks. Go to You Tube and type i Dr. Danielle Martin. This bitch will set your teeth grinding.
