REpublicans let us down consistently on this. The only thing worse than a Republican is a Democrat.

“I don’t take advice from Mormons anymore and particularly, nuts like Glen Beck.”

Sadly, he’s right. There is no force in DC today to bring spending under control. Who is going to cut Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare? Who is going to cut federal pensions? Welfare?

And, that leaves military spending which Obama already shamefully neglected to pump up Medicaid and payoffs to his public union supporters and government dependent supporters.

So we have to spend on the military but cannot cut anything else. Obama’s legacy is we are trapped in a deficit we have no political will to do anything about.

The only hope is sustained growth at a high rate and that interest rates don’t go through the roof. If they do, all bets are off—tax revenues plunge and interest service skyrockets. That’s Obama’s other legacy, we should be raising interest rates but to do so will be disastrous. So we cannot.

I’ve been pointing out for years that the evidence is that spendthrift Republicans are willing to go along with conservatives if they are in opposition to a Democrat in the White House.

But once there’s a Republican in the White House they feel their oats and start to spend freely, joining with the ever eager to spend Democrats.

Though the erosion of party discipline was already noted in 1998’s Not So Radical Republicans, Reason magazine ( https://reason.com/archives/1998/07/01/not-so-radical-republicans ), it wasn’t until W entered office that the moderates REALLY felt their oats. Indeed, they quickly understood that if Bush wanted any of his agenda he’d have to service them. And so began a veto free era that cumulated in 2006, after which the Democrats showed us what real spendthrift was like.

Still, the exact same moderates that voted for Part D voted in, IIRC, lockstep against Obamacare ... something only naked partisanship could accomplish. Under Obama the moderates again roped it in for partisan reasons.

With Trump I expected them to quickly start making demands and spending freely, but it seems the core of the never Trumpers were so opposed to The Donald that it took them nearly a year in some cases to realize it was a Republican in the White House.

The Democrats will love to help them spend. They know their base loves the spending and relatively few of the Republican base will be forgiving. Helping moderate Republicans spend is a win-win for Democrats.

Bush League Republicans must become extinct before the Republic does.

It’s the spending. We are taxed enough.

It’s been going up that much or more every year for the last 10 years. This year’s result is year one for Trump. I think I’ll wait and see what happens.

I think that the massive growth coming up, for years, will start to pay down the debt. It’s only been 2 years, and Trump HAD to get some things taken care of first - like rebuilding the military. Honestly, with record breaking growth, less people on handouts, less people on food stamps, and more and more revenue from business expansion and people working, and the debt will get tackled.

That’s my hope.

A guy who is suppose to be an 'expert' in political analysis and he couldn't see how great Trump was and preferred Hillary to be elected!

I’m not going to address the core of Beck’s argument.

However, I am really annoyed with the misuse of the word “officially”, when the speaker means “truly” or “completely”.

2017 was still Obama’s budget passed in 2016. 2018 is year one of Trump.

I agree with you. The improving economy will generate a lot of tax revenue.
