Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

How do you administer a formulation of these herbs?

Interesting about Motherwort. It is something I have not used and have just started to look into it. It is good for heart, that is why I got a tincture, can’t remember which brand. I still haven’t opened it, heart is doing much better. Kanchanar guggulu is supposed to be good for goiter, how awful to have it hamper swallowing.

The proportions of the herbs would depend on the person’s needs or condition. I would also add some catalyst and digestive herbs, and they might depend on the person’s constitution.

If someone needs more mental focus and memory, the proportions would be different then if they needed calming and evening out emotional ups and downs, or nervous system conditions like tics, tremors, or the more serious symptoms of Parkinsons or MS.

if you mean “how to get it down the throat”, then the best way is to mix a teaspoon (amt depends on age/size/needs of the person) twice a day, in 1/2 c. warm water, a bit of honey can be added, stir well, and bottoms up! Powdered herbs can mix with any liquid, and are easily swallowed. Or even mixed with other foods if need be, such as with children, can be mixed with applesauce, etc.

I’m glad someone suggested a natural healing thread.

I have a lot of info to share and am glad to do so, and I know there is a lot to learn from others’ knowledge and experience.

I’m still working on a wart. Cider vinegar seems to have almost destroyed but not quite...

Thank you for this; never heard of Kanchanar Guggulu, and I see all sorts of articles on search. I will look further into it. Ty again!

It is definitely helping and has helped with my low thyroid; funny thing about a lot of herbs is they normalize. I don’t mean every one of them, but many do. For instance, Jatamansi is good for hypo and hypertension, so it will normalize low or high BP. Which is good for me because I’ve had periods of wild swings.

Bacopa – Bacopa monniera Up to 2 grams 2X a day,br> ---------------------------------------

I've been taking the Mind Lab Pro universal nootropic since jan and one serving only has 150mg of Bacopa Monnieri. I guess for therapeutic purposes you need massive amounts. I've noticed some very positive results but the Lion's Mane 500mg, thats part of the stack is giving me an awful skin itch. Just the other day stopped taking it to get it out of my system.

Thanks for the list of herbs.

Lion’s Mane, what is that? I know that Motherwort’s old name was Lion Heart but is that the same thing? I am not familiar with Lion’s Mane.

Herbs generally speaking (very generally) need to be taken in goodly amounts; of course not very reducing (reducing means reducing toxic loads, antibacterial/antimicrobial herbs), they need to be taken in smaller amounts, and only as needed.

But for supportive, tonic or maintenance herbs, usually a lot more needs to be taken than many people realize. I found this out myself and also it is mentioned in many herb books that I have. Altogether I take about 3 or more tablespoons of herbs a day.

But it is always best to not over-do, and be cautious about starting any herb, and to work up to a good dose gradually. One this is that if people don’t take enough of an herb or formula, they won’t feel better, and then get discouraged and think “it doesn’t work”.

That’s one reason why I prefer to take, and recommend to others, to take powdered herbs in water, you can adjust the amount and of course it’s cheaper than capsules or tablets. For me it’s a lot easier to take them that way, I loathe swallowing capsules or pills.

Hmm, I think Lion’s Mane is a fungus/mushr

Okay, found this:

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lions-mane-mushroom#section10

There have been documented cases of people experiencing difficulty breathing or skin rashes after exposure to lion’s mane mushrooms, likely related to allergies.

That article on healthline.com gives a very good summary of Lion's Mane mushroom. If you have allergies Lions Mane may cause some unwanted side effects but it does have an excellent effect on cognitive functions. Have noticed that my memory recall has been improving lately and most of that is probably from Lions Mane. Noticed in the article that its safe to take larger dosages, but should probably built up to it.

Powered herbs in water is how I take many of the herb I get from liftmode.com. That's how I take their baicalin which is a bioflavonoid found in the Baikal Skullcap plant. Its a very good sleep aid with zero side effects.

Thank you for that information. I didn’t know that Skullcap was good for sleeping too.

Do you take any chemical meds for your thyroid?

No, never did. I have no health insurance and not enough to get any, or pay for regular doctors or prescriptions etc. I did read that synthroid or whatever it’s called, is quite cheap. But I wanted to see if I could help it with herbs. I need to take more kelp, that is good for it too.

I pretty much treat everything without drugs; on a rare occasion I take antibiotics (bad sinus infection with face all swollen, for instance) but I am allergic to most of them anyway.

Even OTC meds I rarely get, make my own substitutes, use herbs, or get natural type things instead. I make a cough syrup that helps clear the lungs, the sinuses and is good for sore throat too.

I appreciate so much your details on Kanchanar Guggulu. I have so many of the issues you described so I did a bit more reading on the Banyan site. My order should arrive today. Excited to see what I experience.

LJ, I had a severe sinus infection 3 years ago and went to DR, took 3 months and 3 antibiotic prescriptions and it still came back.
I found a website (which I’ve lost due to a computer crash) that explained how to use colloidal silver w/Xylitol and do a sinus flush.
I did it twice and in 30 minutes all the stuff was blown out thru my nose.
I’ve never had a problem again. I do the sinus flushes as needed and it keeps everything under control

The first time I had very bad sinus infections I was working in a live in situation and had nothing with which to help myself, very bad situation. I thought I was going to die.

Second time, years later, it was connected with an upper molar that decided it was time to torment me. So it was a complex thing, I took Zithromax, which is about the only antibiotic I can take.

Now if I feel that something is lurking, I do extra neti, and also neti (I guess that is like a sinus flush) can be done with diluted herb tea along with the salt. Basil, oregano and thyme teas are all strongly antibiotic, tea has to be very well strained and diluted.

Was the colloidal silver diluted or at the usual 10ppm? Ours pretty much is 10ppm. I use it to rinse with after teeth brushing/flossing.
