There is no evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a master at the board game called "chess", but he is a grand master at a real life version of the game.
In 2016. he began an operation to discredit the American system of elections. He took advantage of the basic stupidity of many American politicians and journalists to create the delusion that he had colluded with Donald Trump to affect the presidential election.
Putin was a Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB, the highly effective Soviet Secret Police. If the Russians had been trying to elect Trump, any Russian contact with the Trump campaign would have been done in secret to avoid detection. Putin is intelligent enough to know that some Americans would vote against a candidate favored by Russia.
Putin had Russians meet with Trump campaigners to set Trump up for a collusion charge in the event Trump won. I became suspicious of the real purpose of one meeting because a tv news story sounded like someone might have coordinated the meeting with the Department of Justice. The discovery of the meeting seemed too easy. I'm not a fan of Putin, but I respect his intelligence. He would not have used people so unprofessional that they would be caught while engaged in what should have been a secret operation.
Putting people in apparently compromising situations is an old KGB tactic that the KGB used to blackmail people into cooperating with the KGB such as by providing access to information. The Russian contact with Trump campaigners is a variation on this tactic with the goal simply being to frame people in Trump's campaign.
I doubt that Putin wanted either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump to be President of the United States. In 2016 Putin likely thought the best outcome would be a discredited American election especially if the winner would be forced out of office. . Putin had been criticized for his conduction of presidential elections. Creating a scandal about an Amercan presidential election might prevent unfavorable comparison of Russian elections to American elections particularly if Putin could claim the "American Secret Police" rejected the candidate voters wanted.
Putin is certainly aware of how much the Soviet Union had benefited from the Watergate controversy. The fall of Richard Nixon was followed by the fall of U.S. backed governments in Vietnam and Iran. The Soviet Union was able to take advantage of the weakened American presidency to invade Afghanistan.
If Putin has any derogatory information about Hillary Clinton, he will probably keep it secret unless she is elected president.
This farce has gone on long enough. Congress and President Trump need to concentrate on the real problems our nation faces.

They ran a few ads, some pro-Trump, some pro-Hillary, most of their ads were in Russian. According to Julian Assange, the e-mails were downloaded from the DNC server by an employee of the DNC. There is no way in hell that the Russians would have wanted a strong on defense team like Trump-Pence over a pathetically weak Democrat one. It was Obama-Hillary-Biden who substantially helped to strengthen the Russian military position, while, at the same time, significantly weakening ours.
Obama-Hillary-Biden gave them everything they wanted and more on missile defense, Nukes, including the New Start nuke treaty and Iran nuke deal, plus, of course the Uranium-1 deal, where Hillary Clinton allowed Russia to take control of 20% or more of our nation's uranium production.
The Russians have a long history of grand deception and disinformation, AND of getting involved in other country's elections. Just ask the Ukrainians.

Rudy Giuliani, President Trump's personal attorney, said Friday on "Fox News @ Night" that he will not be traveling to Ukraine as previously announced.
Giuliani, a former Republican mayor of New York City, said that he believed he would be "walking into a group of people that are enemies of the president, and in some cases, enemies of the United States and in one case, an already convicted person who has been found to be involved in assisting the Democrats with the 2016 investigation.
"There was a great fear that the new [Ukrainian] president would be surrounded by, literally, enemies of the president [of the United States] who were involved in that and people who are involved with other Democratic operatives," he told host Shannon Bream. ..."

On Wednesday, [May 1, 2019] Attorney General William Barr testified that he is “concerned” about the Trump-Russia dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) asked Barr whether or not the Department of Justice (DOJ) could confirm that the Steele dossier was not part of the disinformation campaign Russia used to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
“How do we know that the Steele dossier is not itself evidence of the Russian disinformation campaign, knowing what we know now that basically the allegations made therein were second-hand, hearsay, or unverified,” Cornyn stated, referring to key claims in the dossier that the report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller disproved, such as the claim that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen traveled to Prague.
“Can you state with confidence that the Steele dossier was not part of the Russian disinformation campaign?” Cornyn asked.
“No, I can’t state that with confidence and that is one of the areas that I’m reviewing,” Barr replied. “I’m concerned about it and I don’t think it’s entirely speculative.”
If Russia had a hand in the Steele dossier, that would imply that Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the DNC either worked with Russians or were duped by the Russians in their disinformation campaigns.
It would mean that the real “collusion” with Russia may have been on the Clinton side, rather than the Trump side.

While the mainstream news media hunts for evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, the public record shows that Democrats have willfully used Moscow disinformation to influence the presidential election against Donald Trump and attack his administration.
The disinformation came in the form of a Russian-fed dossier written by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele. It contains a series of unverified criminal charges against Mr. Trump’s campaign aides, such as coordinating Moscow’s hacking of Democratic Party computers.
Some Democrats have widely circulated the discredited information.
Mr. Steele was paid by the Democrat-funded opposition research firm Fusion GPS with money from a Hillary Clinton backer.

The same Democrats who have condemned Russia’s election interference via plying fake news and hacking email servers have quoted freely from the Steele anti-Trump memos derived from creatures of the Kremlin.
In other words, there is public evidence of significant, indirect collusion between Democrats and Russian disinformation...”

This is just more of the Russia “narrative”. They are desperate to salvage their collusion story. NO they have moved on from Trump knowingly colluding, to grad chess master Putin supporting both sides in some Byzantine plot to make Americans mistrust elections.This of course is the only possible way to square Russians supposedly making the piss dossier to hurt Trump, yet at the same steal Hillary’s damaging email and get it to wikileaks.

The Russians were not involved at all, none. The entire Russian boogieman story is a farce. What Russia hoped for was a president like candidate Trump, not interested in a new cold war, but very interested in trade and friendly relations.
This would help their domestic economy, and drastically reduce their defense needs. They literally were standing on the sidelines shaking their heads as they were blamed in various insane theories.
The bottom line is that democrats are all in the Russia must be after us because that explains why they lost. about 2/3 of Republicans are all in on Russia because they despise Trump attacking globalism and they want a new cold war for defense industry financial reasons.
