To help reduce its climate impact, Amazon is taking some of its first steps in replacing its delivery trucks with electric alternatives.
The tech giant announced Thursday that it is ordering 100,000 electric delivery trucks from Michigan-based Rivian, which will manufacture its vehicles at a factory in downstate Normal.
The Amazon order is the largest Rivian has received to date, and the company says it expects to begin deploying its trucks to Amazon in 2021.
Amazon said the commitment is part of the companys goal to use fully renewable energy by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2040. Amazons Climate Pledge, which was revealed Thursday in partnership with Global Optimism, also includes using solar energy and carbon offset technology. The initiative invites other corporations to participate as well.
Large companies signing The Climate Pledge will send an important signal to the market that its time to invest in the products and services the signatories will need to meet their commitments, said Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos in a statement.
Amazon also said it invested $100 million in reforestation projects around the world.

The Detroit Big Three are being left behind.
Oh yeah, that is SO woke... You know over 50% of the Illinois power generation is nuclear? Isn't that, somehow, evil?
how, exactly, is the necessary electric generation sustainable? that is the question.
All those loaded electric trucks, on the Dan Ryan, the Eisenhower, the Stevenson, at 5:00, in the dark, in January, when it’s 10 degrees and the heater and the defroster is blasting to try to keep warm, and it’s snowing, again...
how, exactly, is the necessary electric generation sustainable? that is the question.
They better buy a bunch of tow trucks too.
Is he going to buy SOLAR chargers to charge them with? If not, I don’t see how this solves anything.
My school bus got stuck in '67, a Friday, as I recall. the school thought it would be OK...
The '79 one started New Years Eve, about 5:00pm, and didn't stop until February... The city were towing buried Beemers from side streets in Lincoln Park, and dumping them on the softball diamonds, where they were buried again. The only people who knew where they were were the car strippers... Come the end of March, you could get a Blaupunkt, cheap. They fell off a truck.
How many shootings because some idiot moved a ratty kitchen chair from a shoveled parking spot?
Be able to tell when they charge them up by the brown-outs...
I’m curious what the total overall cost per mile is over the entire expected lifespan of the electric vehicle versus a conventional diesel or gas truck?
Like others have already mentioned, cold weather kills electric vehicles overall efficiency.
I used to be impressed with Amazon when they shipped 100% UPS or USPS. Now with their own trucks my orders have been 3 - 4 days later than promised.
IMHO the real question no one wants to face is what is the environmental impact of creating that many huge rare earth batteries? No one ever even asks that question but you can bet your ass that None is not the answer.
They better secure a huge toxic waste dump/facility for when the batteries all need dumped.
Sustainability. Liberal-speak for I am a feel-good dumbass who doesnt know how power is generated, but let me stand over here and virtue signal like Im doing something of significance.
I found the bits about the Saudis and taxpayer subsidies of particular interest.
It should be very interesting to see how this plays out and the problems that they encounter with it.
IMO, let them try. They are paying for it themselves and I think it will be a great way to prove how impractical and unfeasible the whole concept is.
Wow. Better bring on some more NG and coal fired power plants.
Paying for it themselves?
Given the info contained in my above link, I highly doubt it.
So woke of Amazon to buy battery powered trucks, no doubt made without any fossil input.
“They better buy a bunch of tow trucks too.”
Those making the buying decision have the data to figure out the trucks’ ability to function in the environment they’ll be in.
Either Amazon has figured out that the electric trucks will indeed be cost effective, or their decision is a publicity stunt, or they’re just stupid.
I’ve said before that delivery vehicles seem like a good role for electric vehicles since they run a predictable route and can be recharged every evening. However, I’m not convinced that even as delivery vehicles battery power is the best means of propulsion.
