Teachers union: 'Scream bloody murder' if schools reopen against medical advice
Politico via Yahoo ^ | 4/28/20 | Nicole Gaudiano

The nation's two biggest teachers unions say they would consider strikes or major protests if schools reopen without the proper safety measures in place or against the advice of medical experts — raising the possibility of yet more school disruptions.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, previewing a reopening plan first with POLITICO, said funding is needed for a host of public health measures for schools, including personal protective equipment. Collective bargaining, strong enforcement of safety standards and protections from retaliation will be important for teachers and staff so they feel safe to speak up as schools try new approaches, she said.

If schools are reopened without proper safety measures, “you scream bloody murder,” Weingarten said. “And you do everything you can to ... use your public megaphones.”

“You put all things on the table when it comes to student safety,” Eskelsen García said. "And ... I don't think we'll be alone."

Teachers are preparing for the possibility of staggered class times, temperature taking, physical distancing and other measures that will create an unrecognizable K-12 classroom experience for students when schools eventually reopen.

I got a better idea. How much money do schools get per student? Give that amount to parents to continue homeschool their kids.

Bam! Problem solved.

Cut off the pay of all public school teachers. Then you’ll hear the bloody murder screams.

Found it...

Some say reopening will require a lot more time from teachers and support staff, but that can’t come free.

“There will probably be some instances where we will have to look at renegotiating contracts for teachers

$$$$$

OK fine, you don’t want to go back to work, I’m sure some of the millions of unemployed people have the necessary skills and qualifications to teach most, if not all of the course is currently being taught. It would probably be a better education if you got many of the leftist teachers out and replaced With people who use their business, English, science, etc. education in real life so they can teach exactly what is needed.

Yep. They are just using this as an excuse to try to get more money. In many districts they found a way to offer some form of distance learning online, they can figure it out using their current contracts or they can get out of the way and let someone else do the job.

Actually, we should just close down “public indoctrination centers” once and for all.

This isn’t a good take. You can disagree with the scream bloody murder part. Hell, I would, too. But this hasn’t been a vacation, and they wouldn’t be getting “back to work”.

I do see a problem with opening schools if social distancing guidelines are still in place because it isn’t possible to do in a classroom. On the other hand, I doubt we’d see high turnout among the students.

For the safety of the children... schools should now be open this summer and every summer every summer from now on. Teachers should take their paid time off during the bad flu months. That is my medical advice. Oh the teachers might not like having winterish vacations? Too bad!

I remember when teachers actually TAUGHT. The memory brings a tear to my eye, considering the current crop of propagandists.
