Confinement is an interestingly authoritarian word to use.

not easy to find online for some reason, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson in UK used the Ferguson/Imperial model in his speech to the Nation last night:

11 May: Daily Mail: Boris Johnson claims the UK will test ‘hundreds of thousands of people every day’ – despite ministers FAILING to hit 100,000 tests a day target for eight days in a row
(scroll down) Boris Johnson’s speech in full: Prime Minister’s lockdown address to the nation
And though we grieve for all those we have lost, it is a fact that by adopting those measures we prevented this country from being engulfed by what could have been a catastrophe in which the ***REASONABLE worst case scenario was half a million fatalities...
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8305471/Boris-Johnson-claims-UK-testing-literally-hundreds-thousands-people-day.html

massive piece of propaganda from Reuters, but full of interesting timeline re Ferguson, other scientists:

7 Apr: Reuters: Special Report: Johnson listened to his scientists about coronavirus - but they were slow to sound the alarm
by Stephen Grey, Andrew MacAskill; Additional reporting by Elizabeth Piper in London, Gabriela Baczynska in Brussels
At first, when NERVTAG met on January 13, it studied information from China that there was “no evidence of significant human to human transmission” of the new virus, according to minutes of the meeting. The scientists agreed the risk to the UK population was “very low.”...

On January 21, scientists on NERVTAG endorsed the elevation of the UK risk warning from COVID-19 from “very low” to “low.” SAGE met formally for the first time the following day about the coronavirus threat. So did COBRA, which was chaired by Matt Hancock, the health secretary, who would contract the virus himself in late March. He told reporters after the meeting: “The clinical advice is that the risk to the public remains low.”...

Then, on Friday the 21st (JANUARY), came a death in Italy and a bloom of cases in Lombardy and Veneto regions. Britain has close links to both countries. Thousands of Britons were holidaying in Italy that week...
Indeed, the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, SAGE, had recommended that day, with no dissension recorded in its summary, that the UK reject a China-style lockdown. SAGE decided that “implementing a subset of measures would be ideal,” according to a record of its conclusions. Tougher measures could create a “large second epidemic wave once the measures were lifted,” SAGE said...

for Boris Johnson:

10 May: Daily Mail: Has our mad mass house arrest during Covid-19 saved even a single life?
by Peter Hitchens
I have yet to see any reason to believe that throttling the economy and imposing mass house arrest have saved a single life. Deaths from Covid-19 peaked and began to decline in this country on April 8, a decline far too soon to have been brought about by the Johnson Panic of March 23...

btw Brits weren’t the only ones holiday in Italy when Chinese were still flying in and out:

28 Feb updated 16 Mar: The Local Sweden: What you need to know about the coronavirus in Sweden
But like many European countries, Sweden experienced a second and larger ‘wave’ of cases linked to the outbreak of the virus in Italy, the country hardest hit in Europe.
Sweden’s second case, a man in Gothenburg who fell ill after visiting Italy, was confirmed on February 26th. After that, the number of cases grew with many linked to Sweden’s February winter sports holidays, which many families spend in ski resorts including in the (Italian Alps.

By mid-March, just under half of the infections in Sweden were linked to recent travel to Italy, and many others were due to travel or direct contact with people who have the virus, with other countries including Iran, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, and the United States...

the other reason Sweden has more deaths than other Scandinavian countries:

10 May: Yahoo: Sweden admits failure to protect elderly in care homes
by Pia OHLIN, Agence-France Presse
Sweden, whose softer approach to the coronavirus has garnered international attention, admits it has failed to adequately protect the elderly, with around half of COVID-19 deaths occurring among nursing home residents...
Reports have flooded Swedish media in recent weeks of care home staff continuing to work despite a lack of protective gear...

Trump led the way!

10 Mar: The Local Sweden: UPDATED: Is it no longer safe to visit Italy after the coronavirus outbreak?
The situation has rapidly changed in Italy since we first published this article, not least because Donald Trump has announced a travel ban on European countries including Italy.

Initially the message from Italian authorities to tourists was ‘don’t cancel your trip’, but that was when the coronavirus outbreak was limited to a few small towns in the northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto...
The government expanded that list to include ski resorts in the Italian Alps on Monday.
The tourism sector’s 13 percent contribution to Italy’s GDP is expected to shrivel as a result.

Farage on the PM’s speech which was hoped to end the lockdown in the UK:

11 May: UK Express: Nigel Farage tears apart Boris Johnson’s TV address - ‘Was that really it?’
NIGEL FARAGE has mocked Boris Johnson’s TV address and joked the biggest change was that people could now sunbathe in public places.

let’s see, I can’t let you out of your house because I might have to send you back into your house.

The worst case is you’re back to where you started from.

Consider the following gamble:

Behind one door: freedom
Behind the other: remain in your house

You have nothing to lose to pick a door.

Now, let’s think about this a second. Justin Trudeau is not as stupid as he looks. There has to be a reason why he and left-wingers everywhere don’t want the economy re-opening.

The reason is because they realize the free money will stop flowing when most people are back at work.

When the A students get their As, and the B students get their Bs, even the C students want a grade, in order to distinguish themselves from he D and the F students.

In the Pass/Fail world, the C students think they’ll be rewarded like A students, which isn’t going to happen. The Pass/Fail world breaks down pretty quickly.

Similarly, the economy breaks down when there’s no reward for being productive, whether because you were lucky when in the IQ lottery or because you work hard.

According to our ‘dear leader’ Just not Ready Trudeau... There will be time for pointing fingers after this ginned up ‘crises’ is over... The longer he can prolong it, the longer he can avoid accepting blame for wiping out thousands of world war 2 vets... 80% of our deaths have occurred in seniors residents.

I don’t bother listening to this person. He basically shredded a great deal of whatever credibility he had left as a leader when he sneaked across the inter-provincial border to visit his wife and kids over the Easter weekend when everyone else was told to stay home. Not to mention his farcical and tasteless run at gun control in the wake of the Nova Scotia tragedy.

That is the excuse they use, but they know once the lockdown ends, they will never be able to get it going again. The Berlin wall is coming down!
