I guess he’s not the least bit familiar with history, at all.

Slavery existed a total of 78 years in the United States of America established with the signing of the Constitution.

Thomas Jefferson included strong anti-slavery trade language in the original draft of the Declaration of Independence, but other delegates removed it.

Sorry, the United States of Amercia became a nation with the signing of the Constitution in 1787.

Slavery existed in the US for sum total of 78 years.

What other country worked at an finally ended slavery over such a short timespan?

They need to start looking at Spain, Portugal, and other European countries, rather than the US.

In 1794 the US banned American ships from participating in the slave trade and the exporting of slaves from the US by foreign ships.

In 1800 the US banned its citizens from investment and employment in the slave trade.

In 1806 In a message to Congress, Thomas Jefferson calls for criminalizing the international slave trade, asking Congress to “withdraw the citizens of the United States from all further participation in those violations of human rights … which the morality, the reputation, and the best of our country have long been eager to proscribe.”

In 1808 in Michigan Judge Augustus Woodward denies the return of two slaves owned by a man in Windsor, Upper Canada. Woodward declares that any man “coming into this Territory is by law of the land a freeman.”

The slave trade was abolished by Great Britain in 1807 and by the US in 1808.

We fought a massive Civil War in the 1860’s to end slavery.

In 1866 Slavery abolished. US government treaties with the “Five Civilized Tribes” in the Indian Territory (the Cherokee Nation, Choctaw Nation, Chickasaw Nation, Muscogee Nation, and Seminole Nation), which allied with the Confederacy, required all five tribes to abolish slavery for renewed US recognition of their governments.

American Indians had not stopped the ownership of slaves Black or Indian.

So legal slave trading existed for 19 years in the US before it was outlawed.

Slavery continued until 1929 in Persia (Iran and other Muslim countries).

In fact forms of slavery are still practiced in the Middle East.

Hmm, where’d the slave traders get the slaves? It’s not like they walked themselves up to the beach.

The United States didn’t inherit slavery from anybody. We created it,

No hole, You didn't.

But you did create:

The murdering Ku Klux Klan
The Jim Crow Laws
Racial discrimination
Segregation
Busing
Fatherless black households
Welfare dependence
Urban renewal (bulldozed black communities)
Affirmative action
Racist cops

Etc etc etc...

The Republicans were in opposition.

Slavery existed in ancient times, in ancient Egypt, China, Africa, Greece, Persia, and almost all places globally from time immemorial. Slavery existed in the America’s before Columbus. But Tim Kaine doesn’t know any of that.

Black captives were sold in North America as indentured servants to British colonists in 1619. These and others were later converted to the legal status of “slaves”. But Tim Kaine doesn’t know any of that.

No such thing as the United States existed until at least 1776. But Tim Kaine doesn’t know that.

Does Kaine even know what day it is? Are all these elderly white Democrats comprehensively ignorant or demented?

Stupid jerk-Kaine. The US did not even exist when slaves were first brought to this country. And how did that happen? Well, the slave markets were in Africa, and it was not Americans who were running the ships bringing slaves to the colonies.

And the USA fought a civil war, outlawed slavery, but there are places in the world, where slavery still exists—so Kaine should go take care of those places, if he really cares about human rights.

I don’t think anyone can ‘inherit slavery’. It is a result of mankind’s sinful nature and has been around as long as civilization - or another way of saying it, as long as there are bullies.

It was Great Britain who first proclaimed that slavery was no longer tolerated within their borders or their kingdom’s territories. About 15 years ago or so, there was a very good movie about this subject named “Amazing Grace”. It was about William Wilberforce and his persistence in fighting the institution. The British outlawed slavery in 1820, I believe. The abolition of slavery then began to grow across the world, but mainly in the English language nations.

We all know that the American Civil War was fought over slavery - although the Confederate states claimed it’s purpose was “States Rights”. The problem was that states rights is a political philosophy in contrast slavery which permits the owning of persons by other persons, like animals or property. So, anyway you look at it, the real reason was whether the USA would remain half free and half slave states. The rest is history.

Kaine really needs to step away from the bong-Britain didn’t even abolish slavery until the 1830’s-long after the American colonies became independent-but they left it legal in their colony in India-France abolished it in the 1840’s, etc, etc-how did we create it with all that going on?

And slavery is over. Hundreds of thousands died to end it. Let’s talk about them.

Good Lord. They act like it’s still going on.

Mohammed owned slaves. Joseph was sold as a slave in Egypt. The Children of Israel were slaves in Egypt. Sparta was a militarized state because of their many slaves. The Romans owned slaves.

The Southern colonies believed in their hearts that they had humanized slavery and improved it over that of the West Indies, where they literally worked their slaves to death. Instead they were allowed to breed, thereby eliminating the need for further trafficking across the Atlantic in human chattels, and the horrific conditions under which those chattels were shipped. When the Declaration proclaimed that all men are created equal and endowed with certain inalienable rights, the new nation, conceived in liberty, became plagued with the contradiction of slavery to that creed. Kain is not ignorant, he just hopes that his audience will be.
