Consider mobility and how much work it is to carry 500 rounds.

Good 30.06 or .270 bolt action for game, semi-auto 5.56 or 7.62 for not so nice 2 legged game, good .22 semi or bolt for small stuff and a 20 or 12Ga for in the house and bagging doves, ducks etc.

My 270 deer rifle is a bolt-I’ve been using a bolt action rifle since I first used a rifle at 10-11, so I stay with the familiar-also less can go wrong...

‘Trapper’ lever action in .357 Magnum.
18-inch barrel is optimum for the caliber, and with non’plus p loads in either 125g or 158g, will eviscerate a coyote, or intruder, at 100 yards, iron sights.

You can load two, shoot two, and singularly load and fire both wadcutters and semi-wadcutters. No change of magazines, or stripper clips.

I’ve shot milsurp bolt actions, overseas the m16 was the tool. The lever action will do

The answer to this question is YES.

I think it’s good to have a variety.

A bolt won’t save you from an angry, motivated mob. Stalingrad ended a long time ago. Unless you’re firing at insane distances with extreme precision, bolt guns are obsolete

After you get your roving/mobile weapon picked, you might want to start thinking of position defense weapon systems.

Every good prepper needs a prep base and logistics storage point, after all.

If the kinks can be worked out, this would be nifty:

And, of course, there’s always evening camp fire time. And in all the books and movies, that’s when bad stuff shows up so...

“bolts don’t jam.”

Yes they do.

AKs, however,do not

“Bolts don’t jam.”

Yes they do. Failure to feed, case separation or failure to extract. Anyone else got any?

Yes, both.

Bolt-action for sniping, semi-auto with large capacity mags for frontal attacks.

Fewer rounds, too. Not a CQB weapon. Oddball calibers if not same as AR weapon. Not a rapid-fire weapon.

“A bolt won’t save you from an angry, motivated mob. “

That’s the fantasy of course. Everyone needs to be ready for a band of Al Qeida frogmen to come out of the sewer pipe to raid your house. And ninjas always attack in groups of at least 15.
But in the real world, under the yellow sun, a 270 or 30.06 bolt or a Winchester ends the mob real fast when they see their fellow mob member’s head do the JFK.

It’s really really hard to train Soldiers and Marines to storm TOWARDS the rifle fire. Takes careful specific training to get people to do that very unnatural act.
An accurate bolt rifle will end a mob because it delivers accurate devastating hits.

Mobs do what they do for one reason only. Forget causes, George Floyd, BLM, etc. They do it because it’s fun. It’s fun to run around in the street doing whatever you please. Accurate rifle fire ends the fun...immediately.

Both. First get a semi auto and second get a bolt action. Any bolt action should be 30 cal and take magpul magazines. I think an 18 in. barrel is the sweet spot unless you are a trained shooter (ie. sniper or designated marksman) then you should go with a longer gun.

I have a buddy who has a number of M1’s wrapped in Cosmoline (spelling?). Any idea what the value of one of them is?

The are many military stories of a trained shooter with a bolt gun pinning down an entire platoon. Carlos Hathcock did it, as have many lesser known marksmen.

Very true, but the author never really makes it clear as to what exactly should be your choice in what scenario. When/ if confronted by man, auto loading the only way to go. When confronted by animal, bolt fine. We won the war (WW2- the only war we won) due to the fact we had the Garand auto loader in the hands of most GIs, the enemy, Japs and Krauts, armed with mostly bolts. An additional factor was our GIs had .30 AP black tip issued to front line troops....taking away the enemies cover ( .30 AP easily penetrates 20” trees, brick walls, rail road ties, cars,...) combined with an auto loader was the winning combination. That said, my primary “ battle rifle” is a Garand loaded with AP....which is still available. If you want to take the game, 150 grn SP 30.06 takes down any North American game. DO NOT ever assume the bad guy knows nothing about cover and concealment.

A bolt-action rifle being used from a known hide, will be overrun. City mob or not.
