When faced with obvious election fraud that changed the results from a Trump landslide to a Biden squeaker... the legislatures actually have no ethical choice other than assigning Trump electors or refusing to send electors to the Electoral College by the deadline which would force this to the House of Representatives. There is no "stomach" of the American people involved

There is a constitutional path to correct this. Nobody is going to push a “new” approach not in the U.S. Constitution.
In a disputed presidential election, Congress picks the President, ONE VOTE PER STATE. This is set forth in the 12th Amendment to the U.S.Constitution.

Your suggestion sounds an awful lot like using the "popular vote" to determine the winner, which would disregard the wishes of those in the smaller states.
The best way to understand the Electoral College is to look at a county-by-county map of the red/blue counties and remember that the Founding Fathers wanted the President to have WIDESPREAD support, not narrow support in just a few locations.
This presumes that the State legislatures are composed of ethical people. By-and-large they are not. They mostly care about graft opportunities and keeping their phony-baloney jobs.
A workable system must provide incentives for unethical people to "do the right thing" - and punishments if they do not. We do not have that kind of system in place today.

Thank God that President Trump's team is not made up of a bunch lazy a$$ whiners who wouldn't lift a finger to even try to right this abomination.
