That was one of Dr. Sowell’s BRILLIANT points - the entire reason they had segregationist laws in the South is that people like you described WERE renting to blacks (for the reasons you say, the free market), and the relative handful of hardcore racists there felt they needed to stop it. Hence the need for the laws.

Should be remembered that the 50s were the decade following WW ll and the Korean War and particularly the Atomic Bombs dropped on Japan. The Korean War actually ended in 52 however. What stands out to me in this period is that technology
flowing out from WW ll was fast forwarded building the base for advancements we have in today’s world including the world ending weaponry overhanging planet Earth today.
