I am trying to remember a scientific paper or book I read once that had a scientific explanation for why various life forms on the earth are the size they are, and are not very much larger or very much smaller than they are. I will try to find it.
I believe his theory considered gravity, limitations on possible optimum growth and optimum species size due to resource availability, and other factors.
Consider the voraciousness of insects and imagine how soon resources they need would be depleted very quickly by insects the size of elephants. Would such insects last even a generation? Then again. is it not likely that insects the size of elephants would become cannibalistic in order to (1) keep their numbers from destroying all their resources too quickly and (b) use their fellows to make up for somewhat depleted resources. So, maybe the theory I read is just bunk?
