Yes. I bought the KitchenAid.

Frankly, once I decided to write an article about it, I knew I had to. :-)

Nope -- got disgusted by the whole thing and just bought whisk...;-)

It’s all about the wage rate and the amount of assembly required. Also freight but that’s more complicated. Oddly enough, even some things that require no assembly and are costly to ship (flower pots, for example) are made overseas - that’s just a lack of reality on the part of America’s mfrs and a choice not to compete, they could but there’s not enough money in it to interest them.

I'm sure you could have found a used U.S. made electric mixer at a resale shop! :-)

(Good column, as usual).

A Black & Decker drill with a bent coathanger wire works fine.

Ali Baba is a great place to see if something is made by the company that sticks its label on it as it is the on-line shopping mall for retailers to find products made by wholesalers.

For example, a lot of the watches sold by fashion brands such as MVMT for $200 or so can be found on Ali Baba for as low as $10. That's the wholesale price that MVMT pays from a Chinese Manufacturer. Somehow the difficult and delicate process of stamping MVMT on the dial adds considerably to the retail price.

Well done on the article. My family members all own Kitchenaid Stand Mixers. We love them so much that we name them. Mine is Lucy.

There’s not a whole lot to break on most kitchen appliances. Probably just needed a switch.

I'm surprised that Walmart offered the KitchenAid mixer. In the past Walmart would not put anything on its shelfs if it was deemed "too expensive".

MagLight, who once prided themselves on 100% Made In America, had to start sourcing some parts from overseas in order to make a profit while keeping the price of their products within Walmart's price range.

The word monopsony entered the public dialog at that time, but unfortunately is never brought up when single payer health care is bandied about.

PS...

There are fantastic finds at thrift shops. There you won’t support the Chinese, even if made in China, and you won’t support a large “woke’ corporation that hates us.

Yes, I own only a wisk.

For a good processor replacement,I have a cutting board and several sharp knives, or a grating plate.

As for a blender, I don’t drink anything that needs blending.

Less clutter, and they work without electricity.

My 20-year-old hand mixer still works fine.

We recently needed a new toaster, because the 20-year-old one wasn’t working well.

We bought one on Amazon (Black and Decker), and it works fine. (I don’t know where it was made).

But we read lots of reviews, and people were wondering why something as simple as a toaster - the basic technology for which has been around for a hundred years or more - should be so difficult to make well. But the one we bought had very good reviews, and we are happy with it.

We also bought a coffee maker late last year - Hamilton Beach - which is possibly the best drip coffee maker we’ve ever owned.

You have to do a lot of research these days - but the internet has made that easy, if you use a little judgment and practice enough to spot fake reviews.

Things may not be made as well as they used to be; but people are still very smart about how they spend their money, and glad to advertise their opinions and the results of their purchases.

My husband used to refuse to buy much at Harbor Freight, because it was all made in China. But, NOW, almost everything for his home shop is made in China, even the previously designated “top brands”. Of course, there are still several tool manufacturers who do NOT have their wares made in China, but their prices are astronomical. In fact, the good brand names are still high priced, even though they’re made in China. So now, he’s not that picky. Some things, he’s willing to buy from Harbor Freight, because the brand he would have bought, is now made in China, anyway.

My blender and food processor are both in a plastic tote under the carport. I can use my Kitchenaid mixer or my $20 stick blender, with less clutter and more convenience, than both the blender and food processor. Oh. I DO have a tiny little black and Decker food processor I use to chop ham and onions when I make ham salad. It holds about a cup. Probably made in China, but it’s still going strong after 25 years...I guess I’ll keep it.
