Most of the “Made in China” stuff comes from places in the far south: Shenzhen, Xiamen, Hainan, etc. Do those cities really get their electricity from a dam so far away?

Respectfully, a narrow view.
This is not merely about the power supply of the TGD.
Over 50% of production would be damaged.
Your reply does not account for the dams downstream
The power plants down stream (including nuclear)
The thousands of acres of agriculture downstream
The major cites that would be flooded downstream
The population relocation (labor force)
The supply disruption
Nor the time to repair, rebuild this damages
...all the way to the Pacific.
Follow the river, to include the cites, farms and towns.
There are geological studies to show the impacted areas.
This would be a major impact to China and the globe
Just went through this same equation last year with 3 Gorges dam doing what it’s supposed to do.
Imagine all those deady Wuhan virus’s in that river then...
