It’s basically new age mumbo jumbo language. So the authors gone off track.
Perhaps the closest I’ve come to “hearing God” in prayer was when I was angry with my wife. I started to complain to God about her, and I’d swear I heard Him reply, “No, we’re going to talk about YOU!”
