Hi. Imho you must control the battle space by air dominance.

From the carrier, to the the armored division, gotta have air dominance and in this case, a couple of attack submarines.

That would make more sense. From what I read a couple well placed 600lb bombs with those old ships would have sunk it?

We are about to find out that our huge carriers are obsolete as well because the Navy still hasn’t found a completely reliable answer to guided missiles.

Unlike the Battle of Midway, there isn’t an ability to hide the fleet anymore from modern surveillance drones and satellites. The vastness of the oceans that once protected our navy simply aren’t impenetrable today. Once pin-pointed, a carrier fleet simply becomes another target.

What if the fleet’s anti-missile defenses are simply overwhelmed by a cloud of small missiles.??? Enemies don’t even have to expend the lives of pilots to deliver a nuclear bomb.

Just my opinion, but we are still building behemoths of the sea that have seen their zenith in tactical and strategic capability in an all-out war with an enemy with minimal resources compared to ours.

Four of the WWII battleships were the fast Iowa class ships that could keep up with Essex class fast carriers.

Six others were 1940s era but slower. The rest had been built prior to 1923, one dating back to 1909.

If Freeprs would stop responding to this 19FortyFive crap, it would disencentivise them from paying someone to post it.

Fact is in this modern technological era virtually all surface combatants are obsolete.

They are not obsolete, until they are. As of yet, they are not obsolete.

New Jersey did good work in the Gulf in 1991. There was, of course, no air threat due to the Iraqi AF all having been blown up or run off to Iran.

Same goes for carriers. They are obsolete without air cover.

“Same goes for carriers. They are obsolete without air cover.”

Yeah, but we’ve got stuff we haven’t even used yet.

Served on USS Vulcan (AR-5), a repair ship. She was a floating machine shop with four 5 inch guns added to make her a warship.

The answer is that the carriers carry their own air cover. I am betting they have defenses against the hyperspeed torpedoes and hypersonic drones, too.
