Rule #2: Don’t use live rounds on a movie set.

“Prop” in a movie sense, does not mean “fake” or “substitute”. It means a gun used in a simulation, like a movie. All articles used in movies are “props”.

I bet most people, when they hear “prop gun” think “not a real gun.” You and I may know that but a lot of people don’t. They would be more accurate to call it what it was - a gun.

True. A “prop” in a film is short for “property.” Doesn’t mean fake. A real working lamp in a film is a prop.

I guarantee that a lot of people, when they hear “prop gun” they think “not a real gun”. A prop gun could also be a fake gun. The media should just call it a gun. Period.

I went into town a few days ago. At the loop there was this guy with a sign saying he’d rather bum money on a street corner than look for a job.

He looked a lot like that picture...but without the shirt...

We have heard nothing from the Armorer. Did she check out the weapons on the “cart” or was she union and left the set with the rest of the crew before the accident. Also, it was claimed that the weapons were being used for target shooting. Seems we need so more information. This is not to lessen the responsibility of the Ass’t Director and Baldwin but to clarify what actually happened. Baldwin is an arrogant a$$hole and the chaos of the operation is what would be expected from him.

“This is on the Armorer,”

She bears some responsibility, for sure. But Baldwin pointed the weapon at another human being. Baldwin pulled the trigger.

That’s on him and him alone.

Negligent homicide at minimum.

I agree that Baldwin bears some responsibility, because it is standard practice in productions to always 'cheat' the aim when 'shooting' someone on camera, just for this very unlikely possibility.

However, I believe that they were filming a closeup scene of Baldwin shooting someone from the point of view of the victim. This necessitates that Baldwin point the gun at or very close to the camera, and both the Director of Photography and the Director were standing next to the camera, where Baldwin was required to point his gun.

That's how you get scenes like this:

But it is the Armorer's job to keep the prop guns secure, to make sure they are properly loaded with the required dummy or blank cartridges required for the scene being filmed, and to MAKE SURE NO LIVE AMMUNITION IS ON THE SET, EVER.

She is the one who should have triple-checked the firearm before handing it directly to Baldwin.

Perhaps INSTEAD of condemning guns and gun owners, Alec Baldwin should have learned BASIC gun safety! The REALITY is that he pointed a loaded gun at a person and PULLED THE TRIGGER! That is NO “misfire”, the firearm WORKED AS DESIGNED. HE failed to CHECK to ENSURE that it was unloaded. I’ll bet he did not even know HOW to CLEAR it.

In a sane world he would have been handed the gun, cleared it by checking it and visually inspecting it, and would have immediately fired the person in charge upon finding a live round in it.

Hard to do with a muzzle-loader, as others have depicted the gun model, a Colt pre-cartridge revolver. How do you check it? Without a depth gauge? Usually the open end of the cylinders are capped with grease to keep the ball from falling out--for sure if there's only a paper wad over the powder and not a ball.

What you have as #1 is not the FIRST rule. FIRST is that the responsibility and accountability for the firearm is totally upon the person handling it, the moment he/she touches it.

In case this keeps someone else from making the same mistake I did ... I wanted to break it and check if it was loaded but half-cocked it instead. So I thought I’d dry fire it and start over.
