I got an idea: bring me back on active duty and "laterally promote me to full General/Commandant of the Marine Corps and watch me get the Corps back to where it was, an effective fighting organization.

Hint: we get our tanks back and no ladies (or men who want to be ladies) in the infantry.

This takes REMFs to whole new level beyond Remington raiders.

Nope, they are looking for drone drivers. Kids that were raised by computers and are masters at gaming. No way they could get through boot camp. But, the Marines need them now.

Parris Island, 1989. This was before 'The Crucible', it was simply called BWT, Basic Warrior Training. But we pretty much did the same stuff.

This is basically how Booty Judge was appointed as an LCDR. He didn't have to go to any training. He's just magically a Navy officer.

I haven't been too happy with the last few Commandants. Al Gray was my Commandant, and he set the bar pretty high.

I don't think anyone after him has reached it.

In WWII my father was drafted. He had a very abbreviated boot camp (learn how to salute, etc) and designated as a Tech Sergeant. These were non-combat roles (although during the Bulge that changed). He handled the company records, delivered messages, etc, supporting the front-line troops. Necessary and valuable role.

In today’s military, there currently are and will be growing roles for people who are essentially non in-your-face combat roles. No need for the basic training other than the underlying military training, not running obstacles, etc.

...in the United States Navy, a rate is a comparable term to a rank in other military services, not a job....a rating is this:

United States Navy ratings are general enlisted occupations used by the U.S. Navy since the 18th century, which denote the specific skills and abilities of the sailor.

My old rate was Petty Officer 2nd class; my rating was Radioman.....

My late father was a Marine JAG officer, and never forgot his basic training at Parris Island. I don’t think he ever forgave his DI I am sure he would not approve of this move..

Hell, even those soft Air Force pukes go through some basic training {but I think it is called home-ec}, i.e. baking, cleaning, sewing, etc

You were going so good until you started in with the nasty name calling. What you've said was true. But to be fair, most USAF recruits can count past 10 without taking off their shoes and socks. Can you say the same about the Marines? LOL. All branches contribute to this once great nation of ours. USAF just does it in pampered style.

Much respect to my Marine brethren. Semper fi, Devil Dog.

something tells me this is just a way to get more unqualified women and blacks into the USMC, by saying that they have some sort of special skills. Sort of an Affirmative Action program.

The Marine Corps had something like this when I went to boot camp back in the early 1980s. Certain enlistment contracts allowed Marines to obtain immediate E-2 rank pending completion of boot camp. Of course, until they graduated boot camp, they were called "recruits" like everybody else.

It's not too hard to work quickly through the enlistment ranks in the Marine Corps if you work hard and keep your nose clean. I managed to get to E-5 (Sergeant) after just over three years in. Had I re-enlisted, I would have likely gotten E-6 (Staff Sergeant) or into the warrant officer program within two years. The warrant officer program offers the enlisted Marines who possess specialized skills a career path that gets them pay more equivalent to what commissioned officers would get.

I don't believe in circuiting any of this process. Every Marine should need to go through boot camp. Those that are allowed to take the path of avoiding boot camp will never be true Marines and they just won't have the respect of real Marines.
