Quote “Russian media report that retired US Admiral Eric Thor Olsen, who commanded a special forces group, has been captured.

At the same time, seven Americans were killed in the city of Rubizhne, as they participated in the hostilities on the side of Ukraine. This was stated by Assistant to the Chechen leader Apta Alaudinov.”

23/ Fifth, #Surovikin must meet Russian political intent of drawing the war out for as long as possible. Putin clearly believes the west will eventually lose interest in the war, and supporting Ukraine. While this is yet to be proven, he appears convinced this is a possibility.

And the McCarthy wing of “conservatives” will play right into this bit of Russian wishful thinking, and once again snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - as the GOP has done too many times to count or recount.

Similar reporting to yesterday.

“Lawmakers Consider Plan to Lock In Ukraine Aid in Lame-Duck Session”

“U.S. lawmakers are weighing plans to pass a multibillion-dollar aid package for Ukraine before year’s end, congressional aides said, reflecting fears among Democrats and some Republicans that a new and potentially GOP-controlled Congress would be less supportive of such assistance.

The discussions, which haven’t yielded a concrete legislative proposal, are aimed at wrapping potentially tens of billions of Ukraine aid in a must-pass, year-end government funding package, assuring Kyiv of continued military and economic support through 2023, the aides said. Congress has until Dec. 16 to fund the government and avoid a shutdown.”

“Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, without naming his House counterpart, said on Friday, “a Republican majority in the Senate will focus its oversight on ensuring timely delivery of needed weapons and greater allied assistance to Ukraine.” Mr. McConnell said Kyiv needs additional air defense, long-range missiles and humanitarian and economic aid for the coming winter, and he criticized President Biden for not expediting assistance faster.”

“Russia is on track to exhaust Belarusian Military equipment and supplies anyway, without them having to formally enter.”

Very nice.

“Quote “Russian media report that retired US Admiral Eric Thor Olsen, who commanded a special forces group, has been captured.”

...and no other news outlets or Governments in the World seemed to notice.

In the real world, there would be quite a bit of reporting and discussion if something like that actually happened.

It did not happen. Not everything anyone puts on the Internet is true, even if you really, really want it hard.

ADF’s General Mick Ryan: [Given this, what kind of campaign can we expect Surovikin to construct & lead in the coming months? First, he will sustain his campaign targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and the will of the Ukrainian people (despite there being no historical example of this being successful)]

Really? What about the razzias and chevauchees that tied up in knots the adversaries of fairly small expeditionary armies sent forth by Arab and English rulers?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razzia_(military)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevauch%C3%A9e

Note that the idea was to weaken the enemy by attacking the civilians upon which he depended to maintain his army, while limiting friendly casualties. It was also an attempt to force him to mount a desperate attack against his tormentor on terms disadvantageous to him.

This is obviously the opposite of a humanitarian tactic, but it’s got a long and storied history. Whatever the learned solons who drafted the relevant Geneva Convention protocols might say about its ethics, the people who engage in it aren’t doing it because they are psychopaths who revel in the suffering of their victims, but because it’s been beneficial to invasion efforts in the past.

Seems to me that a razzia or chevauchee is more akin to a modern thunder run, where you actually send in fast-moving ground forces to demoralize and discredit the enemy leadership. I think that’s different from just firing missiles or dropping bombs precisely because you lack the conventional forces to conduct a ground raid.

Because the Russian defense likely consists of a series of more or less mutually-supporting strongpoints rather than a continuous trenchline. The correct way to defeat that kind of defense without suffering huge casualties is to identify the most vulnerable ones, isolate them with indirect fire, raids, and other means of "shaping the battlefield", then taking them down one at a time. Or, isolating them to the point where they withdraw on their own. Then, you move to the next. But that takes time.

Also, the closer you get to more built-up urban areas, the harder/more expensive that ground is to take. So, you'd prefer to isolate supply lines, cut off reinforcements, etc. to weaken them before trying very costly frontal assaults.

Quote “Russian media report that retired US Admiral Eric Thor Olsen, who commanded a special forces group, has been captured.

Admiral Olson is long-retired, and 70 freaking years old. Literally. He was not in Ukraine, and has not been captured. It's just a lie.

Common sense should have told you that. If a former U.S. 4 star was captured fighting in Ukraine (as if a 70 year old 4 star would be doing that period...), there are a million ways the Russians could have publicized/proven/propagandized that fact. Didn't happen.

If you actually believe that stuff, I feel sorry for you. If you don't but are just spewing propaganda you know to be untrue, then you're a scumbag for deliberately posting lies on FR.

There are no US boots on the ground.

Sorry, you are wrong.

Officially, you are correct.

Unofficially, there are always some foreign observers/advisers and volunteers on both sides in most wars.

I would be surprised if there were *no* Americans in Ukraine, both observing, instructing on the new weapons, and fighting as volunteers.

“fighting as volunteers”

Of course there are volunteers.

But that doesn’t count as ‘boots on ground’.
