I grew up in America and spent most of my life there. I remember what a free, great country it once was. I believed in its promises and I truly loved it because I knew what a wonderful aberration it was in a brutal, tyrannical, uncivilized world.
All of my ancestors immigrated to it from Italy where they had been forced to live in poverty, hunger and deprivation. They arrived in America with pennies and within less than a decade were living comfortable, prosperous lives because they worked hard and followed the tenets of the Christianity that was a huge part of their culture in the Old Country. At the time America's sensibilities were based on those same sensibilities so my ancestors had little trouble figuring out and navigating the lay of the land.
With a few exceptions, no other nation would have given them the opportunities they enjoyed and availed themselves of.
I returned to their Old Country, Sicily to be exact, and currently live there because the traditional Western notions of right and wrong, of good and bad, of beauty and ugliness and respect for one's fellow man rules the roost far more so than in America now.
That gas tax translates to > 40 cents per gallon, and at the start only applies to individuals. I’m sure this is on top of other fuel taxes.
