True, but our deep state has been lying to us about their power/capability for decades to increase our military funding. So I’m shocked I believed that lie.

I suspect China really isn’t that good either.

What you suspect about the capabilities of China isn’t worth a bucket of warm spit to our troops.

Nations are not protected by kooks.

And repeating “deep state” every day is just your boogeyman. Pointless.

A Ukrainian prisoner of war gunned down in cold blood after saying “glory to Ukraine” in front of his Russian captors has been hailed as a martyr.

In footage shared on social media, the lone man smokes a cigarette in a clearing in a forest while Russian guns are pointed at him.

In his last moments, he defiantly says “slava Ukraini” - the Ukrainian war motto - before being shot to death in repeated bursts of gunfire.

“You’re a b-—. Die, b-—,” say the assailants, in footage that Kyiv said amounted to further proof of Russian war crimes.

Andriy Yermak, Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, said: “There will be retribution for every such war crime. No one can hide from her. We will find everyone.”

Foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba called on the International Criminal Court to launch an immediate investigation into the footage.

It is unclear where or for what unit the Ukrainian soldier had been fighting when he was captured.

The unnamed soldier’s apparent death has been shared widely by members of Ukraine’s armed forces as he is hailed as a hero by fellow troops.

The Telegraph could not immediately verify the footage.

Kyiv’s intelligence service has previously warned that Russians had been ordered to kill Ukrainian prisoners of war, a war crime according to the Geneva Convention.

It came as Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian mercenary boss, “sent a truckload of Champagne” made in Bakhmut to Ukrainian women to mark International Women’s Day in a social media stunt.

The Kremlin-linked tycoon shared footage of him helping load the sparking wine onto a lorry as fighters from his Wagner Group appeared on the cusp of victory in the eastern city.

Wagner captured the Bakhmut Champagne Winery and Siniat enterprise, in the eastern part of the city, in December.

His boastful claim came as Western military analysts said Ukrainian troops were likely conducting a “limited tactical withdrawal” from the besieged salt-mining city in the Donetsk region of the Donbas.

Moscow’s forces captured new positions in eastern, northern and southern parts of Bakhmut on Sunday, Russian military bloggers reported.

It was also claimed that Wagner forces had pushed Ukrainian troops back into the centre of Bakhmut, in a sign that Russian troops are close to encircling the city.

Vladislav, 27, a Ukrainian fighter wounded during recent fighting in Bakhmukt, told the Telegraph: “Now practically all the dominant heights are under their control, so it has become harder to move unnoticed and, in fact, we have already been surrounded from three sides.

“The situation is extremely difficult. Our guys are real lions, fighting for every centimetre of their land.

“At first, they [the Russians] did not save ammunition at all and literally bombarded us with iron, now it has become harder for them and they began to use them more sparingly because they are running low. But it has always been hell, both at the very beginning and now. Now it has become harder, the guys who hold the defence there are real titans.”

In recent days, Ukrainian troops defending the city against countless human waves of unprepared, poorly trained Russian troops have complained that they are running out of material to continue defending the city.

Mortarmen are rapidly running out of ammunition and having to use weapons dating back to the Second World War, while reconnaissance units no longer have enough drones to provide a critical overview of the battlefield because they are being lost at such a rate, the Kyiv Independent reported.

“A mortar could be attacking us for three hours, we wait for support, there’s no support,” said Serhiy, a Ukrainian soldier defending Bakhmut.

“They tell us hang on, you will get support in half an hour to an hour. We wait for seven hours, there’s no support,” a comrade, also named Serhiy, added.

They both complained that a lack of artillery support and infantry fighting vehicles, like the ones recently donated by the US and Germany, have made their task harder.

Footage analysed by military experts confirmed Ukrainian troops had destroyed a railway bridge over the Bakhmutka River to prevent Moscow’s forces from moving further into Bakhmut, after videos of the incident were shared widely on social media.

Ukraine could also be preparing to establish a new frontline on the western bank of the river, according to the latest assessment by the Institute for the Study of War, a US-based think-tank.

“Ukrainian forces are likely conducting a limited tactical withdrawal in Bakhmut, although it is still too early to assess Ukrainian intentions concerning a complete withdrawal from the city,” it said.

“The Ukrainian defence of Bakhmut remains strategically sound as it continues to consume Russian manpower and equipment as long as Ukrainian forces do not suffer excessive casualties,” the think-tank added.

Officials in Kyiv have denied that Ukrainian forces are pulling out and insisted that the troops will only retreat from Bakhmut if they have to.

But fighting over the eastern city appears to have reached its climax, with Ukraine slowly ceding ground to Russia in the area.

Brutal urban combat and trench warfare have inflicted heavy losses on both sides in what is Kyiv and Moscow’s single-longest battle since the Second World War.

Borys, a Ukrainian combat medic, told the Kyiv Independent that, of the 500-strong battalion he travelled to Bakhmut with in December, just 150 soldiers were left.

“When you go out to the position, it’s not even a 50/50 chance that you’ll come out of there (alive),” Serhiy added. “It’s more like 30/70.”

Prigozhin, whose Wagner forces are spearheading the Russian assault on Bakhmut, on Sunday said his troops lack ammunition, asking in a video to his followers whether the shortages were down to “ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal”.

Russian invaders have shot an unarmed Ukrainian prisoner of war after he said “Glory to Ukraine”.

Source: the video of the execution, which is being shared online; Andrii Yermak, Head of the President’s Office of Ukraine, on Telegram

Details: Several internet bloggers and social media channels posted videos of the execution.

The footage shows a Ukrainian soldier, who had been taken into Russian captivity, saying: “Glory to Ukraine”. After that, the Russian invaders executed the prisoner of war, shouting: “You’re a b**ch. Die, b**ch”.

The President’s Office of Ukraine has responded to the brutal murder of the unarmed Ukrainian defender.

Yermak stated that war crimes are cultivated in Russia and whitewashed by their propaganda and myths about “Nazis.”

Quote: “Killing a person taken to captivity is another example of this. It is also an example of their national insignificance and weakness.

There will be a payback for every such war crime. No one will be able to hide from it.”

I’m annoyed by childish ranting rather than intelligent conversation.

There is a “deep state” bureaucracy. It does not explain everything that happens in the world.

Childbirth during wartime: Kherson Police take pregnant woman to delivery ward under fire
Monday, 6 March 2023,
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/03/6/7392178/

Patrol policemen have helped a woman in her last month of pregnancy get to the hospital in Kherson, during another shelling of the city.

In complete darkness, accompanied by the sounds of explosions, the crew escorted the car with the woman in labour on board to the medical facility, where doctors were waiting for her, the National Police reported.

According to law enforcement officials, patrol police officers from Odesa, who serve in Kherson Oblast, received a call to help a woman who was in her last month of pregnancy.

As a result of explosions and stress, she began to experience premature labour and her waters broke.

“The woman has decided to give birth at a ‘fun time’ and at a dangerous moment, so there are no options. We are on our way,” the law enforcement officers said on the way to the medical facility.

That day, the woman gave birth to a girl weighing 3 kilograms and 51 cm tall.

The next day, the patrol policemen visited the new mother to congratulate her on the birth of her daughter, Maria.
In Donetsk Oblast, a policeman helped a woman in labour get to the hospital on time and was asked to become the child’s godfather.

Or, we could give Ukraine another 100 billion, maybe 100 trillion more?

Is more important than Americans. The treasury only has so much cash these days to loot.

And, note, Mom, ALL of the quotes come from the Kiev Independent. So, what excuses are going to come up with to reject what Ukrainian soldiers themselves are telling a Ukrainian news source? I'm sure you'll come up with something>

https://www.moonofalabama.org/2023/03/why-bakhmut-is-falling.html#more

Yesterday the Kyiv Independent reported from near the frontline about the bad situation for the Ukrainian troops fighting there:

Ukrainian soldiers in Bakhmut: ‘Our troops are not being protected’

Russia’s relentless assault on Bakhmut is sacrificing waves and waves of unprepared men being sent to their deaths. But multiple defenders of this embattled city in Donetsk Oblast feel that they are in a similar boat, according to interviews with more than a dozen soldiers currently fighting in or around Bakhmut.

During their brief visits to the nearby town of Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian infantrymen told the Kyiv Independent of unprepared, poorly-trained battalions being thrown into the front line meat grinder to survive as best they could with little support from armored vehicles, mortars, artillery, drones and tactical information.

“We don’t get any support,” says a soldier named Serhiy, who has been fighting on the front lines in Bakhmut, sitting down with his friend, also named Serhiy, for a conversation in a small cafe in the Kostiantynivka market. Both men are in their 40s but one of them is a bit older than the other.

The soldiers lack about everything that would support their defense:

They say that Russian artillery, infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers are often allowed to strike Ukrainian positions for hours or days without being shut down by Ukrainian heavy weapons. Some complained of poor coordination and situational awareness, allowing this to happen or making it even worse.

Mortarmen spoke of extreme ammunition scarcity and having to use weapons dating back to World War II. Drones that are supposed to provide critical reconnaissance information are also scarce and are being lost at very high rates in some parts of the battlefield.

All this leads to terrifying casualties of both dead and wounded. "The battalion came in in the middle of December… between all the different platoons, there were 500 of us," says Borys, a combat medic from Odesa Oblast fighting around Bakhmut. "A month ago, there were literally 150 of us."

“When you go out to the position, it’s not even a 50/50 chance that you’ll come out of there (alive),” says the older Serhiy. “It’s more like 30/70.”

The soldiers describe the Russian operation as small reconnaissance followed by artillery fire. This is repeated again and again until it has reached the desired result. The very reasonable application of this tactic is why I disregard claims of 'waves or Russian cannon fodder storming forward' or of 'high Russian losses'. They are obviously nonsense:

The older Serhiy says that the enemy likes to send a team of three or four expendable foot soldiers to attack and make the Ukrainians expose themselves by shooting at them. At that point, the more elite forces zero in on the defenders’ position.

Once they begin exchanging fire, the Ukrainians are struck with heavier weapons like Russian mortars and rockets from Grad multiple launch rocket systems or BMP infantry fighting vehicles and BTR armored personnel carriers with machine guns.

“They get the positions where we are, establish the coordinates, then they hit us from seven to nine kilometers out with mortars,” as well as from closer by with grenade launchers, says the older Serhiy. “They wait for the house to fall so we have to jump out. The building catches fire and then they try to finish us off.”

“Their birds come out and they chase us with fire,” adds the younger Serhiy, referring to Russian UAVs, like quadcopters and Orlan-10 fixed wing drones that spot distant heavy weapons. “They hit accurately.”

As Russians destroy more and more buildings, Ukrainians keep losing more places where they can reliably take cover. Borys the medic says people have been lost when their entrenched positions collapsed from heavy Russian fire, suffocating them.

“I’ll put it like this, we should get our people out because if we don’t take off, then in the next few weeks, it’s going to be bad,” says Oleksandr. A mortarman named Illia agrees that Bakhmut is “practically encircled.”

For lack of ammunition there is no Ukrainian counter artillery fire. Infantry fighting vehicles are held back from the front. The little trained Territorial Brigades are send in at night to be killed the next morning:

Multiple soldiers say Bakhmut troops are barely given enough time to learn to shoot a rifle – sometimes their training is just 2 weeks, before they’re dropped into the hottest parts of the most intense current battle of the war. They would have preferred for troops to get a minimum of two or three months of training before being deployed to such a hot spot.

“Two weeks’ live training and they’re sent here. You can’t do that,” says the older Serhiy. “Or it’s a person who once served in the army, how long ago was that? Obviously they forgot everything.”

“We were promised that we wouldn’t be sent to the zero line right away, that at first we’d be sent to the second or third line,” he continues. “And then we came here in the middle of the night and they immediately sent us to Bakhmut.”

... According to both soldiers named Serhiy, most brigades are insufficiently trained and lack the experience for an environment as brutal as Bakhmut. People are taken at night to a place they’d never seen before and the battle starts in the morning.

“This is why positions are abandoned, people are there for the first time,” says the younger Serhiy. “I went to a position three times and was given six people who hadn’t fought at all before. We had a few dead and wounded that had to be evacuated… Our people are not being protected.”

Oleksandr confirms that while some battalions fighting in Bakhmut are well-trained and ready, most of them aren’t and many were thrown in at night without much preparation. “Yes, that’s true, my battalion was not prepared,” he says. After five months without a single break from the fighting, only half of Oleksandr’s battalion is left, he says.

“They shouldn’t have rushed to throw everyone in there,” says the younger Serhiy. “Better to abandon those positions, who cares? It’s better to properly train people.”

Do you read anything more about that new Russian counterbattery technology that they're calling "Penacillin"?

The one article I've seen by Mark Sleboda made it sound like a hoho arty piece or tank could no longer fire more than one shot before being flattened ten or twelve seconds later.
