He and the NFL caved on this right after George Floyd’s death, so it was likely a knee jerk emotional reaction. Ditto for the Cleveland Indians.

LoL, guilty as charged. Love beer and used to have an Adrian Peterson jersey. Only worn in the house on game day. I’m long over it now.

ignorance and not disrespect (arising from European thinking they had found their way to India

Let's bear in mind that, in terms of anthropology, the Europeans who described the men they found in North and South America as "Indians" were correct--certainly as correct as anyone who describes white folk here today as "Europeans."

Why? We now know that the ancestors of the American Indians all came to our hemisphere over a land "bridge" that once connected present-day Siberia and Alaska. It washed away millennia ago, but the geological and fossilized evidence of the link from both sides and along the ocean floor are irrefutable.

In particular, the evidence includes the fact that our Indians were and are genetically related to the Siberians of the frozen north and to the East Indians of South Asia.

The usual theory is that Columbus didn't realize the world was as big as it is, and had no idea that North and South America were there. He certainly didn't publicly let on that he knew.

There is also another theory, based on how incredibly reliable his geographic and sailing expertise were. After all, he managed to reach the same beach in the Caribbean islands from 4000 miles away in Spain without any modern navigation tools--four times in a row, without losing his way once.

That theory is that Columbus had plenty of information from other navigators in the exploration game, which was a major "industry" at the time. And he was acknowledged as the best navigator. It could be that, reasoning from the earth's geometry and perhaps odd sightings noted by other sailors, he put two and two together and concluded there was a huge, mystery land mass in the middle. But bear in mind that the voyages that could be financed by the "market" of Europe's kings and queens were ones dedicated to finding a quicker route to the hot markets of East Asia.

Considering how rich Columbus and his sons got from income from his discoveries in these "Indies," it could be that he was as crazy as a fox.

Sure sounds like an American.

As a 20% Indian and life long Redskins fan I concur. The Redskin name honors my ancestors who fought for their cultures.

On the other hand I am grateful that those evil Europeans came and dragged us kicking and screaming out of the stone age while adopting many of our ways and words.

I still say they should have moved the team to Oklahoma City and adopted George Washington as their mascot.

Too funny for words. Left wing fascist progressives force them to change the name and now the Native Americans (commonly referred to as Indians) fight back.

“In particular, the evidence includes the fact that our Indians were and are genetically related to the Siberians of the frozen north and to the East Indians of South Asia.”

Related to East Asians yes (from Siberia down to Manchuria, Korea, Northeast China Coast) and out to the East China Sea (northern Japan), and Southeast Asians (Taiwan, Philippines, Malyasia) maybe, but NOT Indians (who in the H are “East Indians???).

Even the “Indies” did not ever refer to northern and northeastern Asia - the dominant ancestral source(s) of native Americans.

That some people at sometime made that mistake was out of ignorance, like saying “all Asians are the same”, when they are not. India is considered part of Asia but, for example, Indians and Chinese are not the same.

And Indians - from India - arrived in Malaysia and Indonesia as part of British and other European colonial enterprises (18 & 19th century), not significantly earlier.

(who in the H are “East Indians???)

Did you ever hear of--wait for it--the East Indies?

It's a time-honored term to describe the multitude of islands, peoples, and things dotting the vast eastern Pacific.

It's a huge area that's mostly water, not a very specific term, genetically speaking. A variety of groups have lived and traded there. If you haven't heard the word before, congratulations. You have now.

Reminds me of the Fawlty Towers classic:

"No no no, the N_____s are The West Indians, these people are W_gs!"

The “East Indies” is in SOUTH eastern Asia and nowhere near the migration routes of Asians to the Americas.

Define "nowhere near," and migration laughs. Migration is gradual, and it's a constant. The next village, the next island across that gulf, where there's better fishing, and pretty soon, a few hundred years later, some of your descendants are far away.

Notice that many Siberians have epicanthal folds. Notice that the Ainu of northern Japan and the Kamchatka Peninsula--who preceded the Japanese in Japan, etc., have both body hair like Westerners and epicanthal folds like the Japanese--who refer to the Ainu as "the Hairy Ainu."

When they studied the genotypes from both sides of the land bridge, they found plenty of "diversity." That should be no surprise. From the Philippines to Japan is the same distance as Japan to Siberia.

ROFWL

Over eons yes, everyone had ancestors who came out of Africa at some point and is therefore related to everyone else. LOL

Yet that is different than trying to specically relate “native Americans” to folks on the Philippine Islands, Malaysia and Indonesia, and their surrounding islands.

There are bad dudes in the NFL, and plenty of good dudes too. I’m not enough of a fan to go out and buy fan gear, but, if I DID buy a jersey, the skin color of the player would be no factor.
