Japan started losing its culture when the MTV culture took hold. It turned the young population into self centered idiots.
Seems to me that the government should start giving incentives for women to have babies.
Maybe have work from home policies for women might help.
I think it is refuse to allow them to become a citizen. I have an American friend who has been living and working there for 35 plus yrs. Married twice there too.
This is what happens to a conquered nation.
They don’t want their culture bastardized like the US and Europe has done to themselves.

Wouldn’t the age of those excess deaths matter more though? If it’s a bunch more 80 to 100 year old people dying...that would be a “good thing” as they are draining society as they are not productive any longer. But if they are 20-40 year olds then that is a huge issue as you’re losing your workforce.

False . I could get Japanese citizenship if I wanted it and I am 100% American .
I’m not sure the two are related.
What happens when you’re poor you can’t afford to do anything so the only fun thing to do is have sex. And you’re not going to have protected sex either.
Then that huge family of 12 grows up and they have fewer children because they have a bit more money and an easier life and want to enjoy life. So they choose not to have a bunch of kids.
Then those kids grow up and decide they only want one kid at most so they can enjoy their life with all their money.
It’s the cycle of a nation.

My wife is Japanese. I can apply to be a Japanese citizen, but I’d have to pass a test on their language and culture. Japan does it right!
I would love to help Japan improve their birthrate, but I am just one gaijin.

Japan is a very densely populated country. A hundred million people in a country the size of California. IMO there are a number of things the government could do to encourage births. Money is obviously one...your suggestion is another...and calling upon the citizens' patriotism is another. The Japanese are very "obedient" and inclined to pay heed to requests and suggestions from government officials
When you can’t afford to have kids, due to excessive taxation, the rational thing is not to have kids. That is most people have done.
Same thing happening here in the U.S. to a degree, we have a very low birthrate.
They may be preserving their strength, until they die out and exist no more.
