Good mornin', all. Dropping by to say hello. We just got back from spending a few months in Scotland. Boy, do I have a LOT of catching up to do.

We were in the UK during the Hutton inquiry and the Duncan Smith scandal. Man, they are brutal over there. Talk about a post-modern culture. WHEW! Anyway, I hate BBC even more after watching it day in day out. They really do have a monopoly.

Have a howlin' good time today!

Hi, welcome home. Those months away must have been a real eye-opening experience, with regard to Euro thought and culture (and biases, and eccentricities).

Speaking of the bizarre:

BILL Clinton's old girlfriend Gennifer Flowers could be coming to town soon to star in "Boobs! The World According to Ruth Wallis," the off-Broadway musical that boasts a love song titled, "Bill." ....

Ruth Wallis was a Brooklyn native whose risque ditties were huge in the Eisenhower era. But her number "Bill" seems more appropriate to Clinton. Sung by a group of women, the lyrics include: "Somewhere in every lady's life/ is a guy named Bill . . . Somehow you're sure that you'll forget/ but you never will/ So you grow up and marry/ Tom, Dick and Harry/ But you always remember Bill."

One character picks up a book, looks at the cover, and says, "It takes a village." Another replies, "What - to satisfy her husband?" Then all the women on stage sing, "For somewhere in every lady's life/ Is that fella who already had a wife/ You always remember Bill." .... rest of story

FR thread on Gennifer Flowers and "Boobs."

Whew, what a relief. I can breathe again:

Chelsea Clinton and boyfriend Ian Klaus are still on. The couple had dinner on Wednesday at Hue ... DailyNews

Great to see you back here! What a frazzling experience to have nothing but BBC for news. You are indeed a very strong person. I would have gone stark raving mad.

Our flat didn't have Sky, so what's a news junky to do? Should I watch BBC1 or BBC2 or BBC3 or BBC4 or BBC5?

Plus, do they hate Tony Blair. Oh, man! The press over there thinks that Tony is faking his heart condition to get the press off his back.

I was hoping you'd start a Halloween thread.

Just got done dropping off ds at school. All of the staff are dressed like nuns--it was like driving into the 1950's. DS went as St. Michael the Archangel. All of the kids were able to dress up today (unlike the public school that he attended last year), with the stipulation that the costume had to be religious or biblical in nature. The girls that I saw were dressed as angels. Soooooo cute!

The conservatives are in a bit of disarray over in England, it seems. Now that Duncan Smith has gotten the axe, it will be interesting to see whether the party can regroup and gain some power.

Well, their party conference was pretty lame. Pretty sad to see the party of Churchill and Thatcher in a reduced state. Still, there's always hope.

It was pretty interesting to see how anti-Euro the Scots are, though. There's a really strong sense of nationalism there what with de-volution and all. The Scots do NOT like the English. They're very proud of their own culture, even though it was a Scottish king that united the two crowns.

Dennis gets his own talk show!

Dennis Miller (news), the sardonic comedian who delivered a fake newscast on "Saturday Night Live (news - Y! TV)" and told jokes in the "Monday Night Football" booth, will host a prime-time political talk show on CNBC.

The network said Thursday it had inked Miller to a multiyear deal for the political chat show, set to begin in January.

Miller said he would work four nights a week at 9 p.m. ET. More

October 31, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said yesterday that revolting new Iraq torture tapes "portray a regime that was about as vicious as any regime could conceivably be." Rumsfeld also said "there are a lot" more videotapes that show similar atrocities from the Saddam Hussein era.

The new 23-minute tape, obtained and aired by Fox News Channel, shows Saddam's thugs tossing Iraqis from a building and beating, beheading and dismembering them in front of a mob in a public square.

The network said the tape, recently declassified, was given to Army soldiers in Iraq by an Iraqi civilian who played a role in its creation and is now cooperating with U.S. interrogators.

The tape shows Saddam's black-clad Fedayeen militiamen punishing soldiers suspected of desertion and disloyalty in the late 1990s.

"When you have people . . . cutting off people's heads and chopping off their fingers and chopping off their hands, throwing them off three-story buildings, you learn something about a group of people and how they lived their lives and how they treated their people," Rumsfeld said yesterday.

"We are so fortunate they are gone and that those 23 million people are liberated," Rumsfeld said. Thread

October 31, 2003 -- THERE'S no getting around it: Life is getting a whole lot better for Americans and a whole lot worse for the Democrats running for president.

The huge national economic growth spurt announced yesterday came as a thrilling surprise even to Bush stalwarts. One former key economic adviser told me on Tuesday that he was all excited because he believed the growth rate would be 6 percent. Instead, it was 7.2 percent - which means it was 15 percent greater than even this cockeyed optimist had hoped for.

The more you look at the numbers, the more remarkable they are. One key to the growth rate in the second quarter of this year was the huge increase in defense spending - which, thanks to the war in Iraq, rose a staggering 44 percent. But in the third quarter, government spending as a whole rose only 1.4 percent, which means almost all the economic growth came in the private sector.

And a lot of that growth came exactly where you would want it to come - from growth in business spending. That grew by 11 percent, which means businesses are finally shelling out big-time for new equipment. And in very short order, they will need new workers to run that equipment, which means the employment picture is on the verge of brightening considerably.

Consumer spending, which has kept the economy afloat the past two years as businesses have contracted, rose robustly as well, by almost 7 percent. And that would not have been possible without a brilliant economic plan devised by the Bush administration. More

Just the sort of activities that thrill Jacques Chirac and Gerhardt Schroeder to the marrow, apparently.

What a hoot to watch these Dems stand in front of a microphone and say this Economic surge is insignifigant. Who in the world believes them?
