The Guild 11-9-2003 Thoughts Of Finding A Penny

Posted on 11/09/2003 6:09:56 AM PST by BigWaveBetty

THOUGHTS OF FINDING A PENNY

You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being

good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever

heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to

spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend,

Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy,

with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her

house.

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have

this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's

employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest

restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to

indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself

immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that

evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her

husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a

long, silent moment.

Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on

the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped,

and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and

picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had

found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a

single penny?

Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could

stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had

a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of

some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for

the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies

before!

What was the point of this?

"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says." She read the words

"United States of America."

"No, not that; read further."

"One cent?" "No, keep reading."

"In God we Trust?" "Yes!" "And?"

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin.

Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every

single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops

a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him?

Who am I to

pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS

in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that

I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it

were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with

me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk.

I

stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and

fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words,

"In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in

the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!

And, God is patient....

Have a blessed day!!

Rest in peace, indeed.

A caller to Rush's show made an excellent point today.

Perky Katie and the MediaCrats have gotten their panties all wadded up over the media's being prevented from filming military caskets returning from Iraq.

As the caller said, these are the same people who won't show footage of the planes crashing into the towers on 9/11...because they're too upsetting. Yeah, right.

Thanks L. That brought a tear to my eye. Had just been thinking about an uncle who flew out of N. Africa. Just found a used copy of the book, "Target Ploesti"; it details the experiences of one of the bombadiers and also makes reference to my uncle. Will need to start reading it. They were courageous men, as are our troops today.

We owe such a debt to those who've honorably worn the uniform, that it can never be properly paid.

Cheers, Mae.

I grew up in the Methodist church, too. My father was a Methodist pastor. Liberation theology killed the Methodist church. Hillary was extremely caught up in it due to the influence of her youth pastor, whose name escapes me at the moment -- Don something?

John Wesley would never recognize the methodism of today. And neither do I.

I don't get how a religious upbringing creates the monster that MiaT so ably documents...there's other forces in play that took her over to the other side, imo.

Cheers all.

She didn't have a religious upbringing. Church was part of the social strata of her life. Unfortunately, the lib theos got hold of her at a very impressionable age. But you're right, there's a whole lot more brewing under that (sagging) skin than just liberation theology.

Joyce Milton wrote a really excellent book on Hillary - to me it is the best of the group (including Noonan's and Olson's - and you know what a fan of Olson I am, so lauding Milton's work means it really is good). The First Partner is the name of it, I believe.

I read the most interesting thing in The Weekly Standard last night and would like to get ya'll's thoughts on it.

Allegedly, there's a full-on war going on in the Bush administration between the Bush I people (Powell) and the Bush II people (Rice, Cheney, Rumsfeld). Bush I, wanting to protect his legacy and believing that the best way to get out of Iraq is to turn it over to the UN, are absolutely livid with Bush II people for going into Iraq. They are also absolutely livid with Cheney for siding with the Bush II approach and see him as a turncoat of the highest order. That's allegedly why Scooter Libby, Cheney's top aide, has been accused of being the leaker and why Cheney and Rumsfeld have been taking so much heat - that Bush I people are leaking snide things to the press on background that not only aren't true but are meant to get rid of the Bush II people.

I've thought for a long time that Powell needed to go. That Tenet needs to go. And I'm not sure about Mueller. According to TWS, the CIA is openly at war with the White House.

I found this perspective rather chilling. If it is true, I hope Bush cans people pretty quickly.

What do you guys think?

Thanks, I will check it out.

When are you returning to hit up the Hill Country faithful?

There's some more BBQue joints to be enjoyed...or our home can turn out some edible filets, should you like.

Cheers up there.

You are such a dear. I'm not sure when I'll get back to the Hill Country, but you can be sure it won't be soon enough. Are you getting the rain that Dallas got late last week? You guys could use it. It is way too warm here - I can't believe we're half way through November. Not complaining, just puzzled.

Oh, I have to clarify on TWS stuff I just posted - when I said "Bush I, wanting to protect his legacy" I didn't mean to infer that President GHW Bush is involved in this - just the people who were in his admin who have ties to this admin.

No, we just got a few days of chilly, drizzly, crummy days. Not any really good rain here...and you're right, we NEED IT, badly.

Have you secured a handgun yet?

This weekend brings us another show here. I will be there to check out the offerings.

Interesting stuff from TWS. I don't know anything more than the info you gave us.

Will put my ear to the ground, I'm headed to DM in the morning for a couple of days, and am scheduled to meet with the re election team in their office.

If given the opportunity, I will casually mention TWS. That will surely get a reaction from the seasoned pros.

I tend to believe it. Probably some career sort of people. I also think that Clinton planted his cronies deep in the various departments, especially the State Dept. State has always considered themselves a cut above everyone else. I don't know if getting rid of Colin Powell would do the trick though...

I need to hit the road soon. I have a 2 day business meeting in DM, including training for the Caucuses (or is that Caucui?). I always find it amusing when out of staters come in and try to explain to us what they want done at these local meetings. Generally, they don't have a clue.

I will return tomorrow night.

November 12, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton heads to Iowa this weekend, ruffling feathers by stepping into the midst of the crowded 2004 Democratic presidential campaign and headlining seven political fund-raisers in barely 24 hours.
Clinton will do three cash grabs for the Iowa Democratic Party, one for an Iowa congressman, one for her own Senate re-election, and two in Illinois.

The former first lady's visit has miffed some of this year's crop of presidential wannabes, who fear she'll steal their spotlight, and is focusing new attention on her own political ambitions.

Her aides insist she will not be a candidate this time around and will serve out her term to 2006 - but that has not stopped griping from some campaigns of the current Democratic field.

"She shouldn't be doing this and she knows it," said an aide at one campaign.

Added another: "It's in bad taste. It demonstrates that [the Clintons'] real agenda is promoting Hillary. It's pretty craven."

Good grief, how tacky is it for the Beaste to raise money in Iowa for her own campaign?

E, the conflict you describe between the Bush I people and the Bush II folks is quite plausible, and I agree with Utah Girl about the likelihood of (subversive) Clintonistas still embedded in the administration. It's hard to understand why someone like Cheney or Rumsfeld hasn't insisted that GWB clean house at State, CIA and FBI.

In other news, please remind me why we're supposed to care what this Dem sockpuppet has to say:

ARTHUR Schlesinger Jr., a lifelong Democratic stalwart, says there is only one Democratic candidate for president he wouldn't vote for - Sen. Joe Lieberman. "He's the most sanctimonious member of the U.S. Congress," the eminent historian tells Avenue columnist Richard Turley in a wide-ranging conversation. Schlesinger says that on the 40th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, "I've always been agnostic about the theory of the possibility of a conspiracy. I've always felt that at some point, someone involved in the conspiracy would have sold out to the National Enquirer for $1 million." Is there anyone whose judgment he respects who believes the Mafia did it? "My wife, Alexandra, does," he tells Avenue.

Schlesinger opines that Bill Clinton should not have been impeached because, in his own mind, Clinton was not committing perjury when he denied having sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky because the ex-prez is one of the Southern-school types who believes that oral sex doesn't count. (PageSix)

No, Art, Clinton said it wasn't sex because he's a freakin' liar.

Oh my, first she tells a cancer survivor that she's going to have a relapse for lying, then Rosie engages in a little anti-Semitism. What a lovely person.:

Magazine writer Judith Newman must rank fairly high on Rosie O'Donnell's enemies list. On the witness stand Monday in Manhattan Supreme Court, O'Donnell likened the 42-year-old Newman - who wrote a Vanity Fair piece about the nasty death of Rosie magazine - to "the nebbishy Jewish girl who worked for the [audiovisual club]" in high school.

Yesterday, Scarsdale High School alumna Newman responded to AdAge.com's report of O'Donnell's under-oath comments. "I can only say what I said to all my friends: If you're under 10 years old, she definitely loves you. If you're a Jewish girl or a breast cancer survivor, it's a little iffier," Newman said, referring to a former Rosie staffer's testimony that O'Donnell told her that her breast cancer would return if she lied. "For the record, I wasn't in the A/V club." full story
