Tax Return Time, Or, How Are the Tax Cuts Doing (Vanity)
Self ^ | Monday, February 2, 2004 | Self

I did my taxes Friday night and was totally blown away by what a difference the tax changes made. For a little background, I make low 30's, have 2 kids, and am the one that brings home the bacon. I did get the tax rebate for one kid (other is too old at 17). Last year, mid-year, I got a raise ($1), and was worried it would mess me up- in the past, raises have been a mixed blessing- more money- and more taxes. This year though, even with the raise, *less* money was flying out of my check to the guvmint. And, because of the higher ceiling on the EIC, I qualified for that, and I hadn't the last year or two. All in all, I am pleased as punch!!

As anyone else done their taxes yet, and how is it going? Note that I figure the ones who have filed already are the folks like me with just a W-2 and figuring on a refund. The couple of years I owed money from a second job, I didn't file til April.

We're just pulling our stuff together to meet with the accountant. Self employment adds other dimensions, so we shall see. Also our kid was too old for the child tax cut.

Good for you on your good news though!

Haven't done my personal taxes yet, My accountant says that the business saved almost $40,000 this year because of the tax cuts. He's not quite finished with it. The DEMS want to "roll them back" or refuse to reinstate the cuts when they expire this year. Those tyrants can't be allowed to succeed!

Where I work is a small business, and we just got new owners last spring. I'm sure the cuts will help them alot, as they've had to put a bunch of money in- mostly upgrading computers and software.

I'm sure that it will help them. If I'm not mistaken, there are some tax breaks specifically aimed at computer purchases. You bring up another point. People that rant against business often forget that the owners have invested a lot of time and money into those businesses. They risk a lot and sometimes fail a few times before they get it right. The picture painted by the "corporation bashers" is a guy working slaves and living on easy street. Also, the idea of companies not paying taxes is nonsense. Taxes are paid by the employees - which include the executives - when a paycheck is taken.
