PLEASE HELP ME FIND A DECENT INTERNET PROVIDER. I CURRENTLY HAVE AOL, BUT I'M SICK OF THEIR WELCOME NEWS SCREEN WITH THEIR OBVIOUS BIAS.

A lot depends on where you live. I've found that the smaller, regional or local isp's are more reliable.

I just quit AOL last month mainly for the very same reason and the fact that I kept getting kicked off. I rec'd a CD from Peoplepc.com and am using them now. They use IE as their main browser and use accelerator technology to speed up the loading of pages (they cache it before sending it). I've yet to get kicked off (knock wood)and so far so good. They're about $10 a month cheaper than AOL as well. Unless something better comes along I may stay with them until we figure out the DSL deal with SBC in our area.

Good luck and don't look back. AOL didn't really give a S*** when I told them why I was dropping them, so good riddance!!

Time-Warner/AOL (if they are in your area with cable) has broadband called "Roadrunner". I have used it for 3 1/2 years now and have had a bare minimum of problems. Service interruptions are very rare and usually occur in the wee hours.

It's nothing like AOL. You have no ad pages, no set home page requirements. You can have as many as 5 computers on the same connection using a router!

It's around $40 - $50 per month but I'm willing to pay for fast speed and no dropoffs. I just checked my connection speed and the results said 2.8 Megabits per second download and 342 KBPS upload.

You need to check out dslreports.com, the bible for cable, dsl and other high speed internet access.

Well, if you are looking for high speed. If you're looking for modem access, that might be less help. Though speakeasy.net (my current ISP) might have modem service as well.

And do me a favor. About once a month someone comes on asking for such help in getting a computer, or a new isp or some such. Several of us make an honest effort to respond with helpful information. Usually we never hear from the original poster again. So let us know you are seeing this feedback, and a bit of how it goes for you.

One more thing, QWEST has a service called naked DSL, you get pretty decent speed for the price and the advantage of local ISP support, not QWEST. You might wish to check that out.

Just my 2 cents...

I use Juno sometimes on my laptop when I travel and need an internet connection. The speeds are pretty good and you get web-email along with lots of local access numbers across the country. And it's free. You can pay $9.95 per month for unlimited access (and to get rid of a movable ad banner...which isn't all that obtrusive in the first place).
