According to Howie Carr, Boston Herald Columnist and WRKO Radio show host, John Kerry was basically homeless, until he married Taareeza (sic) Heinz, and Mr. Carr states that he has known Kerry a long time, in a casual setting, like the after-hours drinking hole, and from being a columnist, learned a lot about the dem candidate. Between heiresses, Kerry was so broke, he was virtually homeless, begging room and board from friends and even at one point, his ex-brother-in-law. This was during the late 80's, early 90's and Howie Carr tells of an episode in Kerry's life where he borrows Buicks from a car dealership to drive, and didn't pay a cent, claiming he'd promote the cars on the senate floor. Howie Carr was on C-Span, Friday, 7/16/04, and he said that Kerry was well-known as a gigolo, and now is known in Washington as the "ex-gigolo".

Somehow, I don't believe this. Maybe the guy means "broken" but I just don't see broke in my crystal ball.

He should have called his friend, Little Johnny Edwards.

Surely he could have gotten a job at the mill. And if that didn't work out, heck, he could get a job on the farm, plowing fields and "feeling good" but "tired".

To: anyone

just a note-

Funny--the "sources" that "some" people--usually rabid and foaming at the mouth S.U.V burners--go to and BELIEVE for THEIR information--" National Enquirer"!!

There have been alot of stories of Kerry's " Greek features and Roam'in hands" , and about this " sexual disease" that he had picked up??

THAT got past up by ALL on the Left--( including stories of Scrillary's lesbians affairs too) all given / details in the Enquirer. ( All Enquirer front pages too!)

not a "peep"??

but Rush??--and everything that was said "there" but so far... if ALL that was published THERE was true??--(as the Left ate all that up greedily!) what happened?? right?
LEFT jumped on all THAT like it was gosple!!-and TRUE according to the Inquirer!!--So by now , Rush should have beenserving 80years?! right?
Let alone ANYONE ELSE but THEM!!

But Enquirer's Front page articles of Kerry's little journey into "rich wife shopping" and the rest: his AFFAIRS, Diseases, Social hopping!--NEVER mentioned on CNN !! Wonder why??

I LOVE the N. E.!! GREAT for a paint drop cloth!! and the colors don't bleed much! But if they want to use it as a "source" for their idea of "credible" information when they WANT TO--then they should use it too concerning breaking news too about Kerry!!( and the Scrill-Hill)

Oh!! look too!! the GLOBE says that all Conservatives have babies are Marsian!! with Three Heads,- that will eat all your house pets!!!!--Wonder why MovingOn hasn't put THAT in one of their ads too!
Liberasl= " ...all the news that's fit to print...as long as it bashes President Bush. " In-a fun- mood... Tom.

actually as a senator they generally need two places.

One in DC and one in the home state.

I thought Kerry came from a rich family. Or was it the classic case of "title with no fortune"?

You are being cruelly sarcastic and un-feeling. Where is your compassion?

Poor Gigolo John, probably had to make do without a Valet and give up lobster and caviar. The man suffered and it still shows in his face. That face that makes us suffer to look at.

There are many, many reasons why Kerry is a fraud who should NEVER get into the White House without a visitor's pass. You cite some of them. I cite others. Click below.

Kerry comes from the 'poor' side of the Forbes family. His father was a foreign service diplomat. Probably well paid, but not in the same class as his peers. Kerry attended all the right prep schools, etc, but always fought to fit in with his 'betters'.

You are correct. I would also add that the USG pays for boarding schools costs when either there is not an acceptable school at the overseas posting or even if there is, the USG will pay up to amount of the local tuition for children attending school elsewhere. Depending on where Kerry's father was stationed, the USG could have paid most of the prep school costs either in Switzerland or the US.

Kerry's mother was one of thirteen children, so the fortune made in the 19th century (shipping, railroads, real estate, investments) didn't leave much to his generation. His father was the son of a bankrupt suicide, so there was little money left on that side of the family, either.

And yet there were the family estates, including the whole of Naushon Island in Buzzard's Bay, and a privileged lifestyle to maintain, and marrying into a great fortune was always a temptation, implicitly or explicitly encouraged. I guess the phrase is "land rich, and cash poor."

It doesn't sound like the Forbes were terrible or useless people. They were exceptionally skillful capitalists in the 19th century, and their descendants certainly must have had some fun with their money. But John Kerry was the kind of person who always had to come out on top, as though he had to prove something. Consequently he took fortune hunting rather too far.

It's part of a pattern, though. Just as Kerry couldn't just be moderately ambitious, but had to win all the prizes for himself, so he couldn't just make a prudent and sensible match, but had to grab for the biggest brass ring. Like a lot of politicians, though to a greater degree than most, Kerry doesn't have a clue about how other people perceive him.

From a larger, 6 part story on Kerry from the Boston Globe:

"Kerry's personal life, meanwhile, was becoming increasingly tumultuous. He had separated from his first wife, Julia Thorne, in 1982, and the divorce became final in 1988. For much of their marriage, Julia, who came from a wealthy Long Island family, had provided significant financial contributions. The divorce left Kerry strapped for cash and looking for ways to meet child-support payments, campaign debts, and tuition costs.

He took out a $473,000 loan to purchase a home in Washington, thinking his daughters would be staying with him for periods of time. It was "a huge mistake," he says, as he found himself returning to Boston most weekends to maintain his ties to his children and the state. He sold the D.C. home and bought a Boston condo but "lost his shirt" when he sold it a few years later, as he told the Globe in 1996. "He was broke," Blum says.

To make ends meet, Kerry collected speaking fees, averaging about $1,400 apiece and $26,000 a year total during his first five years in the Senate. Most of the honoraria were from think tanks and schools; some were paid by trade associations such as the Massachusetts Bankers Association or corporations such as Goldman Sachs and Chevron, which had legislative interests before Congress.

Kerry pocketed another $21,000 in a low-risk real estate deal in 1986, arranged by his campaign treasurer, developer Wesley Finch. In a business brochure the next year, Finch boasted about his relationship with Kerry, stating he "works closely with the senator and his colleagues on tax and economic issues that come to the floor of the United States Senate."

Finch had cut in his friends, Kerry and his then-Senate aide, Ronald Rosenblith, on an investment in condominium units in Salem and Clinton. One of the units was already under a purchase-and-sales agreement by the time Finch brought in Kerry and Rosenblith as partners, the Globe reported in 1996, although all three said Finch never informed them of that. The Globe calculated their profit at 31 percent in about six months.

Kerry has long maintained he never used his influence on Finch's behalf, but he did acknowledge he was stung by the press reports on the deal and soured on investments after that. "I thought it was legitimate," Kerry said of the deal. But "I found that the inquiries made me profoundly uncomfortable, and I never invested again in the 11 years after that . . . I have never since invested one penny in anything" as exotic.

Kerry acknowledges money "was tight" for him in those days. "I was spending all I had," he says. Regarding honoraria, which Congress banned in 1991, Kerry says: "I did not take honoraria from anyone who had anything in front of my committee."

Kerry also signed on as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the fund-raising arm for Senate Democrats, for the 1987-1988 cycle. This would help him tap the network of national Democratic donors.

Kerry's current wife, Teresa Heinz, calls the late 1980s his "gypsy period." For months at a time he had no fixed address and crashed instead with his daughters when Julia was away or with Julia's brother David.

Sometimes, he stayed with a girlfriend who had been his former law partner, Roanne Sragow, now a district court judge in Massachusetts. (She declined to be interviewed.) Or he stayed with a Vietnam buddy or on a per diem basis in condos owned by wealthy contributors: developers Finch and Edward W. Callan, and lobbyist and campaign fund-raiser Robert Farmer. Eventually, he rented a one-room apartment in Washington and an apartment in Boston.

During this period, Kerry was linked romantically with several Hollywood starlets, including Morgan Fairchild, and his dating life became fodder for gossip columnists in Boston and Washington. Kerry declined to discuss this period of his social life, other than to make this reference to the 2000 presidential campaign, in which then-candidate George W. Bush confessed only to unnamed youthful indiscretions.

"If George Bush can run around and say `When I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible,' " says Kerry. "I can say when I was young and single, I was young and single." "

Quite a find. Kerry has shown a troubling irresponsibility in his private life. It's like he's saying: "Some parts of my life matter, judge me on them, and ignore the rest." Up to a point, we have to do that with our public officials, but Kerry, like Clinton, abuses the privilege.

There's a sense among Democrats that their ideas and ideals matter most and the ways they get their money are relatively unimportant (perhaps because all business is thought to be tainted), but if sex scandals are held more against Republicans because they are assumed to belong to the party of sexual morality, surely shady money deals ought to be regarded as more hypocritical among Democrats who claim to represent a higher and nobler attitude towards commerce and finance.

Morgan Fairchild gave money to Edwards, Gephardt, and Dean before Kerry became the front runner. Afterwards, she did give money to Kerry, but it's interesting that he was far from her first choice.
