Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners has set the all-time single season hits record with two singles in his first two at bats tonight against Texas. He now has 258 for the season. The last year that any player reached 250 hits was 1930!

This is a major major accomplishment. He is to be commended. As you say to break a record that old that no one has appraoched in in decades is amazing.

Yes, it sure is. Some will talk down the record because he did it in a 162 game season, while Sisler played 154 game seasons. MLB has played 162 game seasons since 1961 and only two players have even reached 240 since then, Erstad and Ichiro ... Ichiro twice! Just think of all the greats to play the game and not one of them has reached 250 since 1930. Amazing!

The Suzuki Method seems to work.

Here's to a solid all-around ballplayer!

And here's to the great George Sisler!

Sorry about the double post. I kept hitting "refresh" and the post didn't show up, so I figured I had messed up and posted again. Then both show up. Sorry to all!

Yes, thank you. Sisler was said to be as good a man as he was a ballplayer. A toast to him and his family.

BTW, Sisler’s family is present at the game tonight. Rather than being sour about the record falling, they are happy that George Sisler’s accomplishment is getting so much recognition. Kudos to the Sisler family as well.

No problem on the double, I enjoyed reading it twice. Thanks for the historical perspective too. As for the 240 and 250, I believe I heard that Ichiro last night set the record for hits in a four year period by ANYONE in MLB HISTORY.

I have no problem with the 162 v. 154 game thing. For some odd reason it matters a lot to some in baseball, yet nobody career that former great football RB and current leftist idiot Jim Brown plays some 12 game seasons in the NFL compared to 16 now. MLB seasons are 8 game longer now. That is about 5 percent. In the NFL seasons are 33% longer now than in Jim Brown's day.

What an awesome accomplishment.

Here's an MLB link to the all-time single season hit list:

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/stats_historical/mlb_historical_leaders.jsp?statType=1&sortByStat=H&timeFrame=3&timeSubFrame2=4

Boggs got 240 in 1985, and Carew and Don Mattingly got 238. Ichiro could/should get 266-265. Wow.

One quibble: Since the AL has the DH, how many extra times per year does a typical leadoff person bat? I'm not going to be a sourpuss and say he doesn't deserve his props, but it is worth knowing, IMHO.

Oops. I meant he should get 260-265 hits by the end of the season Sunday.

Here's the story on his record breaking hit on ESPN.com.

A quote from the article... "I would like to give him my heartfelt congratulations," Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said. "He has made extra efforts in addition to having a natural gift."
