Was Dean Martin a Republican?

I ran across this picture and well considering Frank Sinatra was a democrat, I thought Dino was too.

He didn't drink. I suspect he was a Democrat, but certainly no wild-eyed commie liberal. Like Frank, I bet he was a Reagan supporter.

Several comments:

First, Sinatra was a 'Rat. Big JFK fan, invited him to his house in Palm Springs. Spent a lot of cash to build a helicopter landing pad for Marine One (or whatever they called it back then) and then JFK blew him off. I think it had something to do with advisors telling JFK it wasn't good to be seen with someone with suspected mob ties.

Second, I believe Dino was a Pubbie, I remember hearing/reading/seeing that somewhere.

Thirdly, typically, Dean Martin had apple juice in his glass and the whole drinking thing was a schtick (at least from the late 60s early 70s forward).

Thought everyone knew that Sinatra was so ticked off at JFK refusing to come to his Palm Springs house after helping him win the presidency, that he swore Republican. Was a big Reagan supporter in the eighties. I presume so was Dino.

I love listening to Dean's roasts. That was comedy at its finest back then. When real Americans drank, smoke, and ripped on each other good-naturedly.

You have to love a group of people who referred to cuff links as "curb feelers."

Where he was born and raised was primarily steel plants, Steubenville, OH very blue collar and Democrat back then. Supposedly as the years wore on he became Republican.

Steubenville (my home town) is still blue collar and Democrat. Jefferson County went for Kerry.

just a quick FYI- Dino's drunken routine was an act. He rarely if ever drank socially and was a devoted family man. As for Sinatra-he was a close friend of the Reagans and a staunch republican later in life. That is a great picture. My favorite president and three of my favorite entertainers.

Reagan switched his party affiliation to Republican officially in, I believe, 1964 or '65.

As for Deano, I think he, like Sinatra, was initially a blue-collar Truman-Kennedy Democrat. Sinatra, frozen out of the Kennedy circle because of his reputed mob association, switched his support to the Republican Party in the late 1960s. He was honorary chairman of the 1985 Reagan Inaugural.

And of course, Jerry Lewis is a Republican. :)

Frank was a Democrat at one time. After the fiasco with Kennedy not coming to his Palm Springs home for New Year's in 1962 Frank was turned off of Democrats and eventually became a Republican.
Frank was a close friend of the Ronald and Nancy Reagan and if you remember put on the Inaugural Gala for Reagan when he became President.
So Frank changed and left the Democrats behind.

I figured it was. My mom was born and raised there but I haven't been back for anything longer than half a day in about 18 years.

One of my favorite Dean Martin lines...he said,

"Hey, I shook hands with Pat Boone and my whole right side sobered up..."

Jimmy Stewart, the Duke, Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, Sinatra (later) ...solid Republicans in attitude at least Red-Staters as we define them now

Ronald Reagan participated in one of Dean Martin's classic "roast" specials. This photo, I'm pretty sure, is from that particular "roast." (It may even have been a roast of John Wayne.)
